Mugly is a boss appearing in the game Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. He is the first boss that Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong face. Mugly is faced in the Jungle area and his mission is titled Mugly's Mound, where he is hypnotized by Kalimba Tiki. He is the younger brother of Thugly.

History

When Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong are tracking down the Tikis who stole their Bananas, they encounter Mugly. Mugly is normally a peaceful creature, happy to eat his Bananas however once the Kalimba Tiki took over, Mugly turned into a major threat. He grew spikes along his head and back and acquired a hunger for Gorillas instead. Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong battled Mugly. After a gladiator-style battle, Mugly is knocked out, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong defeat the Kalimba Tiki and move on to the Beach.

Battle

Mugly always starts the battle off with a charge attack. You can avoid this attack by jumping, when Mugly stops, his spikes retract which is the Kongs chance to attack. If you are in front of Mugly's open mouth as he charges, he will swallow you and spit you back out. Mugly will also hop around the arena (similar to a Hopgoon). At this point, his spikes are always retracted (also note hitting Mugly in the middle will reward you with a Heart). After 3 jumps on his back, Mugly will become upset. He will then turn from Yellow to Orange. He will continue with his usual moves but he has now added two new ones. The first one only comes after he's done with his hopping attack. He will flip in the air and slam the ground causing a shockwave. He may also do a supercharge and hit the wall which leaves him open for a free attack. After an additional 3 hits, Mugly becomes enraged and turns from Orange to Red. He is now faster and reacting quickly when his spikes retract is very crucial. After 3 more hits, Mugly is down and Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong can take out the Kalimba Tiki who was controlling Mugly.

General information

Physical Description

At first, Mugly is a yellow dinosaur-like monster. He walks on all fours and has a huge mouth with many white, sharp teeth. Mugly has two lazy eyes as well. The monster is covered with red spikes that he can retract at will. During Mugly's second stage, he becomes orange instead of yellow and becomes slightly larger. In his third and final stage, he turns from orange to red.

Attacks

Mugly only has four attacks. His most basic attack consists of running across the screen back and forth. During this time, his spikes are retracted, which makes him vulnerable to a jump attack. Mugly can also bounce along the stage, trying to crush Donkey and Diddy beneath him. The two simians can easily roll under Mugly and strike him on his vulnerable back. During Mugly's second and third stage, he can jump high in the air and create a huge shockwave when he lands. Also, during Mugly's second and third stage, he can charge fast at the duo, but this can be easily jumped over. This causes Mugly to run into a wall and succumb to dizziness. The Kongs then have a chance to jump on him while he is unconcious. During each stage, he attacks more often and performs them faster.
