The series is noted for its dark, atmospheric nature and focus on exploration.

Various elements from the ''Metroid'' series, most notably Samus in both her armored and [[Zero Suit Samus|Zero Suited]] incarnations, have made cameo appearances in the ''[[Mario (franchise)|''Mario'' series]] and its ''[[WarioWare (series)|WarioWare]]'' sub-franchise -- the latter of which ''Metroid'' co-creator [[Yoshio Sakamoto]] is heavily involved with. The two franchises have crossed over fully in the [[Super Smash Bros. (series)|''Super Smash Bros.'' series]].
