Many years after the Shroob invasion and [[Donkey Kong]]'s conquest, King Bowser led his first devastating attack against the Mushroom Kingdom. Using Dark Koopa magic, Bowser transformed many of the kingdom's citizens into [[block]]s, [[Mushroom]]s, and other objects. However, when Bowser discovered that Princess Peach had the power to undo his curse on the citizens, he captured her and seven of her closest [[Mushroom Retainer]]s, imprisoning them in eight castles scattered across the kingdom.
Mario and Luigi soon heard of the Mushroom Kingdom's plight. Quickly, they came to the kingdom and began to fight back on behalf of the incapacitated citizens. They traveled to each of the castles, finding a [[False Bowser]] guarding each, and that "the Princess is in another castle," as the Mushroom Retainers they rescued repeatedly told them. Wasting no time after his defeat with Princess Toadstool rescued by Mario and Luigi in ''Super Mario Bros.'', Bowser again invaded and conquered the Mushroom Kingdom using Dark Koopa magic, kidnapping the Toads once more. He also kidnapped Princess Toadstool and hid her deep inside one of his castles. While many of his troops employed similar tactics as before, several new strategies were used. Some [[Blooper]]s were instructed to fly in the sky and the [[Piranha Plant]]s with their frequent red sub-species spent hardly anytime hiding in their Warp Pipes. [[Poison Mushroom]]s were used as well. [[Goomba]]s, [[Koopa Troopa]]s, [[Buzzy Beetle]]s, [[Koopa Paratroopa]]s and [[Hammer Bro]]s were able to go underwater and are almost invincible as Mario could not stomp on them but had to shoot fireballs in his fire form or use the [[Starman]] to kill them. However, against all odds, Mario and Luigi were able to rescue the Princess once more by traveling through various unknown lands of the Mushroom Kingdom defeating all of the [[Koopa Troop]], the False Bowsers and Bowser three times.

After helping Mario and Princess Toadstool save the Mushroom Kingdom from Smithy's gang, and racing in the first Mario Kart tourney, it was unclear as to what Bowser’s intentions would be in the not-too-distant future. However, this period of hope was ended when the Koopa Troop directly invaded Princess Peach's Castle, isolating it from the rest of the kingdom. Once inside, the Koopas began an elaborate plan to ensure their success. Utilizing the Power Stars that provided energy to the castle, Bowser powered up his troops and entrusted the Stars to them. Each Star was hidden in an awkward location or in the hands of a boss. The majority of the Power Stars were hidden in worlds accessible through special paintings found in the castle. Trapped inside the castle's walls, Peach and the [[Toad (species)|Toads]] could not send news of the attack to the outside world, but by coincidence Princess Peach had sent Mario an invitation to the castle that very same day. With the help of several Toads and hints left by Princess Peach, Mario obtained all 120 Power Stars and rescued Princess Peach. After the game was completely finished, [[Yoshi]] can be found on the roof and he could give his best friend 100 1-Ups and leave.

Mario and Luigi follow, and Bowser Jr. drags her through seven different and dangerous worlds of Mushroom World. Bowser's plans were to create a galactic empire to rule every single bit of the [[universe]]. However, Mario also found himself in space, and with the help of [[Rosalina]] and the Lumas, he was able to reach the center of the universe, where Bowser's planet was being created. Mario defeated Bowser, saved Princess Peach and was able to stop him from taking over the universe.

At [[Toad Town]], Mario discovers an over-sized [[Bowser]] attacking the castle. He kidnaps Princess Peach in his hand and takes her away, hoping for her to witness his creation of his new galaxy in the center of the universe and bake him some cake. Mario heads to Peach's castle where he finds two Lumas. After seeing Baby Luma with Mario, they offer to aid Mario in his search for [[Power Star]]s. One of the Lumas transforms into a [[Launch Star]], which sends Mario away from Mushroom World to the [[Sky Station Galaxy]] and begin his adventure.

Following the adventures in outer space, there existed a Tanooki-tailed tree that stands outside of Princess Peach's Castle, known as the [[Tail Tree]]. One night, a huge storm blows all of the leaves off. The next morning, Princess Peach goes outside to see if the tree is okay, but during her inspection, Bowser and the Koopa Troop once again kidnaps her.
Later on, Mario and three Toads (Red, Yellow, and Blue) go looking for the princess. Eventually, they discover that she is missing and the [[Super Leaf|Super Leaves]] are gone too. Yellow Toad notices a hovering letter near the tree, and the group of four goes to investigate. Mario grabs and opens the letter, and a picture of Bowser holding Princess Peach with Super Leaves flying in the background pops out. The message shocks the three Toads and Mario, and immediately, Mario and the three Toads run to save Princess Peach through various worlds of Mushroom World.
At last, Mario and the three Toads find Princess Peach and, using their Tanooki powers, bring the princess back home to the Mushroom Kingdom.

Mario and co. then tumble out of the tree, passing a [[Bubble Baby Yoshi]] and [[Balloon Baby Yoshi]], while they're at it, and look into the horizon to see Bowser beginning a seige on Princess Peach's Castle, setting the Mario Bros. and the Toads to go on a new adventure and save Princess Peach.
After reaching Peach's Castle, Mario defeats Bowser and sees Peach in a tower. Before he can save her, she is locked inside. Then Bowser returns, and Mario must use [[Bowser Jr]].'s Koopa Clown Car (stolen by stomping the rider) to trounce him. Bowser eventually is defeated and Bowser Jr. runs away in fright. Mario gets to Peach and bows down to her, he is then kissed on the forehead by her, to Mario's shock but delight. The [[Koopa Troop]] leaves and their airship crashes, and Mario and Co. rejoice.

Participants were split into groups of two, with each group commanding one kart. One participant drove the kart while the other used items. While all of the famous racers competed, several people famous for other deeds joined the races. These racers included Daisy, Waluigi, and [[Petey Piranha]]. This tournament proved to be one of the most prominent of the Mario Kart tournaments, with fans easily filling multiple stadiums.

But this time the races even exceeded the [[Mushroom World]], and traveled into the galaxy. Rainbow Road appeared to take place far above the Mushroom World's atmosphere, and one of the races courses even appeared to take place in the [[Gold Leaf Galaxy]]. Racers ranged from the racing veterans such as Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Yoshi, but also marked the racing debut of Rosalina, [[Dry Bowser]], and even [[Funky Kong]]. The Mushroom Kingdom also allowed [[Mii|other human residents]] from the areas to participate for the first time in this competition. The number of participants in each race has been increased by four, making a total of twelve drivers in this tournament.

In the events of ''[[Wario's Woods]]'', [[Toad]] saved the Mushroom Kingdom by his lonesome from Wario's antagonistic capture of the Kingdom. Wario took over the Mushroom Kingdom starting from the taking over of [[Wario's Woods (place)|a once peaceful forest]]. To ensure that nobody tried to stop him, Wario set up many of his minions to serve as mini-bosses in each one of the Kingdom's areas in the game. Fortunately, his plan did not go too successful as his minions were defeated by Toad (with the help of his friends [[Birdo]] and [[Wanda]]). Eventually, Toad defeated Wario himself and saved both the Kingdom as well as the Woods that began it all. In the SNES version of the game, Toad even went to destroying [[Wario's Castle|Wario's own castle]] (that was constructed in the Mushroom Kingdom) by throwing a bomb at it.
While Toad is referred to as the ''Mushroom Kingdom Hero'' in this game, the usual protectors (including Mario, Luigi, and Peach) of the Mushroom Kingdom are oddly absent throughout the events of this game. Even Bowser himself (the main antagonist of the games) was absent during the event of Wario's taking over of the Kingdom. While it is unknown as to where these characters were during this time, it could be possible that this game takes place during the events of ''[[Super Mario World]]'' (a game released a few years earlier). As Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser (unknowingly) had left the Kingdom during the events of ''Super Mario World'' to explore distant lands, this would make Toad to be the only major protagonist to be left in the Mushroom Kingdom (as he did not make an appearance in ''Super Mario World''). Additionally, only characters that are not present in ''Super Mario World'' make an appearance in ''Wario's Woods''. However, the proof that whether or not ''Wario's Woods'' takes place in the same time period as ''Super Mario World'' has yet to be shown.

The Mushroom Kingdom is both a level and a world in ''[[Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars]]''. The Mushroom Kingdom is the name of a single town in the game, as well as [[World 1]], which consists of the levels in close proximity to the town. The levels include [[Mario's Pad]], the home of Mario, [[Mushroom Way]], a passage blocked by Bowser's forces, the Mushroom Kingdom town itself, and [[Bandit's Way]], a den for thieves such as the criminal [[Croco]].
During the events of ''[[Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars]]'', Bowser once again kidnapped Princess Peach. By change, the [[Smithy Gang]], a vicious group of mechanical villains from another dimension, warped the giant sword, [[Exor]], into the Mushroom Kingdom's dimension shortly afterward. Landing in [[Bowser's Keep]] where the princess was kept, they inadvertently saved the princess. However, she could not easily return to the Mushroom Kingdom, and was cut off. In this state, the Mushroom [[Chancellor]] took temporary control as Mario began a counter-attack. The mechanical monster [[Mack]] conquered the Mushroom Kingdom, but Mario, with [[Mallow]]'s help, was able to liberate the kingdom. Mario and Mallow eventually joined up with [[Geno]], Princess Toadstool, and Bowser. This party traveled across the planet, liberating other countries, and reclaiming the scattered [[Star Piece (Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars)|Star Pieces]]. These keys, the [[Crystal Stars]], were the treasures of the Magical Map. After many adventures and gaining new partners, Mario learned the full story of the X-Nauts. [[Sir Grodus]], their leader, had long planned to unlock the Thousand-Year and use the "cataclysm" locked inside to take over the world. Still, this did not explain why they continued to hold Peach after questioning. Tricking Mario into opening the door, Sir Grodus reached the cataclysm moments before the plumber and his friends. The cataclysm that had been sealed away by the Crystal Shards was in actuality an apocalyptic demon known as the [[Shadow Queen]]. She returned to her former self by possessing Princess Peach, and proceeded to wreak havoc upon the scene. Defeating Grodus, she turned her anger to Mario and the rest of the world. Mario was able to defeat her after the Crystal Stars gathered positive energy from their hidden locations and returning it to the scene. The light that resulted freed Peach from her prison momentarily, and she charged up Mario and his partners with her remaining power.

Luckily, this attack had been forseen by [[Prince Peasley]] of the Beanbean Kingdom. He wasted no time in alerting Peach of the situation. A [[Birdo]] agreed to disguise herself as the princess and stand in for her on the day of the attack. The Birdo's voice was stolen by the witch and replaced with an explosive vocabulary. Every time she spoke, the Birdo would cause explosions in the castle. Bowser arrived shortly after the attack to kidnap Peach, but finding the disguised Birdo, he instead lent Mario and Luigi a hand in defeating Cackletta. The trio set off for the Beanbean Kingdom.
Yet, Peach could not travel to the Beanbean Kingdom to notify her heroes of her true situation due to Cackletta's invasion. As soon as she received word of Cackletta's death at the hands of the Mario Bros., she rushed out to greet them. Almost immediately, she was kidnapped by [[Bowletta]], who was truly Bowser possessed by Cackletta's disembodied spirit. After a long battle in the Beanbean Kingdom, the brothers were able to save the Peach and defeat Cackletta by destroying her spirit. Bowser was saved in the process.

Peach then destroyed the artifact and spread the [[Cobalt Shards|Cobalt Star Shards]] throughout the kingdom. The rest of the invasion and the search for the Shards was carried out by [[Princess Shroob]], the elder's younger sister.
As the Shroob invasion spread, the citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom fled, leaving entire towns, such as Toad Town, nearly desolate. A number of unfortunate Toads were captured and brought to [[Toadwood Forest]], where their [[vim]] was sucked out of them to create fuel for the Shroobs' war fleet of [[Shroob UFO]]s.
