They attack by spitting rocks at the fighters. They also appear during Versus Mode hidden in carrier items along with [[ReDead]]s, [[Goomba]]s, and other creatures found in Adventure Mode, although this occurrence is rare. For a reason if Link turns back, the Octorok will pop out making noises and making Link not notice it. Link also has to be careful to pick up Octoroks and think twice in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. If Link does, he is launched in the air which will take a full heart away, and the Octorok comes up and taunts and laughs at Link showing its four tetacles.
