Final Fantasy is a very successful, modular RPG series created by Square Enix. It consists of a series of numbered games; each numbered game is disconnected from the others, but some games have had sequels or spinoffs set in the same universe. Despite this, the series boasts recurring characters and elements such as Moogles and Chocobos that appear in most titles. While Final Fantasy began its life on Nintendo's consoles (the NES and Super NES), it migrated to other systems starting with Final Fantasy VII; however, spinoff titles can still occasionally be found on Nintendo systems, including some titles in its sister series Kingdom Hearts. |

Final Fantasy, a highly successful modular RPG series, is the flagship franchise of Square Enix. Many of Square Enix's contributions to the Mario franchise contain references to, and characters from, Final Fantasy. Squaresoft's Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is heavily influenced by Final Fantasy tonally and mechanically, which can be particularly seen with secret boss Culex, a parody of Final Fantasy bosses of the time. Much later, various generic Final Fantasy characters and enemies appeared in Mario Hoops 3-on-3 and Mario Sports Mix, while Cloud Strife of Final Fantasy VII fame was the first "named" Final Fantasy character to appear alongside Mario characters, in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U.
