Chickens are a real-world species of birds. Several chicken-like species and characters appear in the Mario franchise, including its spinoff franchises, and The Legend of Zelda franchise. Enemies of the same name made their debut in Super Mario Land, marking the debut of a chicken-based species within the Mario franchise. Chickens appear more prominently in the The Legend of Zelda franchise, albeit in the form of Cuccos, which are largely similar to real-world chickens.

In Diddy Kong Racing and Diddy Kong Racing DS, there is only one chicken, a character named Drumstick, who is an unlockable racing character. Prior to the game's events, he was changed from a chicken into a frog by Wizpig.

Donkey Kong Country Returns

In Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, there is another chicken character named Colonel Pluck, a robotics expert located in the Factory who was hypnotized by the Tiki Tak Tribe into aiding their plans for conquest of Donkey Kong Island. Colonel Pluck also built numerous robotic chicken enemies known as Buckbots and Buckbombs to act as part of the security for the Factory.

Wario franchise

In Wario Land II, Wario has a harmless pet hen, who is also attacked by similar-looking male Roosters.

Mario Party series

Mario Party 3

Chickens appear in Mario Party 3 in the minigame Fowl Play, where the objective is to catch chickens.

Mario Party: Island Tour

Chickens and golden chickens appear in Truckin' and Cluckin', a minigame from Mario Party: Island Tour. These chickens look much less realistic than in Mario Party 3, having a round shape and beady eyes. Their purpose is to lay eggs which earn points to the characters who are carrying them.
