Flat Zone is set within a Game & Watch system of the Widescreen series, with the title Smash Bros. on the right-hand side. The stage is based on Helmet, Oil Panic, Fire, and Manhole. Its most regularly-occurring gimmick is a Game & Watch-like figure, holding up platforms in the style of Manhole. The figure will move occasionally, causing some parts of the platform to move somewhere else.

Other lessof common features are falling wrenches, buckets, and other toolsHelmet. Although thatthis doesn'tdoes not initially sound too bad, the tools are incredibly devastating to lower handicapped or heavily-damaged players (due to their high level of knockback, being able to KO them at lowmid-to-high damage),percentages whilewith beinga justdirect ahit. nuisanceFortunately, tothe higherfalling handicappedtools players.can Also,be aavoided manby carryingair oildodging, willrolling, passor by andsimply dropmoving itout ontoof the Stage, way makingas thatthey groundstart veryto slipperyappear.

More rarely, a Game & Watch-like man carrying a oil drum in the style of Oil Panic will pass by. However, he will trip at a random spot and drop the oil. This will spill it onto the ground, making the area very slippery and difficult to traverse by running or walking.

Trivia
* If a player gets hit by any of the falling tools, it will count as a self-destruct.
* If any players get KO'd by any falling tools, they will always get an SD (self-destruct), regardless of if they were attacked by their opponents before getting hit by the tools. This also means that players can't earn KOs by having the tools KO their opponents.
* A similar Flat Zone screen appears in Mr. Game & Watch's Target Test stage.
* Super Smash Bros. Brawl features ananother enhancedGame remake& of theWatch-themed stage known as Flat Zone 2. The music from thisthe stageoriginal isFlat one of the tracks thatZone plays on the stage in My Music. However, unlikeUnlike Flat Zone, Flat Zone 2 is always in a fixed-camera position.
