There are several different kinds of Food in Super Smash Bros. Melee. Coming in several different varieties, food restores a small amount of damage when consumed and can be recovered from Crates, Capsules, and other similar containers, and can be found in large quanities inside of Party Balls at a 36% chance.

Kirby about to consume several pieces of Food.

Food, a two-dimensional item, heals very small portions of damage compared to other healing items. The amount of health restored varies; a cup of coffee may heal two HP while a meatloaf may heal nine. The pieces of food come from various Nintendo game series; the rice treat originally appeared in the Pokémon television series, the Banana Bunch appeared in the Donkey Kong series, cheese, by a sheer coincidence, has appeared in a handful of Mario games, but most of the food came from Kirby games.

These food items will restore your health when you eat them. There are 28 different types of food, and the nutritional value and yumminess quotient differs slightly with each type. Party Balls tend to hold the largest amount of food items. You may be vulnerable when gorging yourself, but you do need to eat to survive.
