The Koopalings debuted in Super Mario Bros. 3, and later appeared as bosses in a few other titles. Following the release of Hotel Mario, the Koopalings went on a hiatus for about a decade until their return in 2003's Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. In 2009's New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the Koopalings were reintroduced into the Super Mario series, let alone the Mario franchise, because they appear as bosses in several subsequent Super Mario series installments and as playable characters in various Mario spinoff titles. Outside of the games, the Koopalings most notably appear in the animated television show The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, where each Koopaling had a different name because they were not officially named during the show's production phase. The Koopalings were also present in the Super Mario World television series.

Bowser has another son, Bowser Jr., who is not a member of the Koopalings, although they sometimes act as his personal minions. Bowser Jr. first appeared in Super Mario Sunshine, and has appeared more prominently in the Mario franchise than the Koopalings.

In several of their early appearances, Koopalings were established as being Bowser's children, and are said to be his offspring. Later appearances treat the Koopalings as simply being among one of Bowser's several underlings, and there is little mention of them being his children. In a 2012 interview with Game Informer, Shigeru Miyamoto stated that the "current story is that the Koopalings are not Bowser's children", despite the Koopalings being Bowser's children in several of their earlier appearances.
