A monarchy is a type of government where power over a sovereign or commonwealth nation are held by one or more monarchs, which is usually passed down through family lines. Some, like the Koopa Troop, are "absolute monarchies", while others, like the Mushroom Kingdom, are "limited monarchies". A monarchy can be a place or an organization. Many locations within the Mario franchise are ruled by a monarchy, most notably the Mushroom Kingdom, ruled by Princess Peach.

Monarchies are also a big form of government in the The Legend of Zelda franchise, specifically Hyrule, which is ruled by the Royal Family of Hyrule.
