Monty Moles (referred to as '''1-up Moles''' by ''[[Nintendo Power]]''),<ref>Nintendo Power issue 185 (November 2004), p. 116</ref> appear as special enemies in ''[[Mario Pinball Land]]''. A singular Monty1-up Mole can be found in every level in the game (except [[The Fun Fair]]), where they peek out from one of their holes and remain as stationary obstacles. If Mario hits a Monty1-up Mole, he gains 500 [[point]]s and the Monty1-up Mole is stunned briefly before moving to another hole. TheHowever, Montythe 1-up Mole will eventually goesgo back to their previous hole if they are not hit after a while. If Mario successfully hits the Monty1-up Mole enough times, they will go to the background and then proceed to drop a [[1-Up Mushroom]] due to digging underneath it (though the 1-up Mole in the [[Frosty Frontier Stage]] drops a [[Star]] instead). After this, the Monty1-up Mole cannot be hit further by Mario. Due to their behavior, the only way a Monty1-up Mole can be defeated is with a [[Starman]]Star. Each level that a Monty1-up Mole appears in also has a unique costume for them specific to that level. The [[Grassy Greens Stage]] has a normal Monty1-up Mole; the [[Frosty Frontier Stage]] has a parka wearing Monty1-up Mole; the [[Shifting Sands Stage]] has a fez wearing Monty1-up Mole; and the [[Fiery Stage]] has a Viking helmet wearing Monty1-up Mole.
