Pigeons are a species of animals from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. There are four different species: Wood, Rainbow, Hotfeather and White. Although largely herbivorous feeding primarily on nuts and grains certain species will not pass up the opportunity to supplement their diet with the occasional insect or earthworm. Like most wild animals in the game they can be hunted by Link for food in the form of the meat they leave behind, the quality of which is determined by their species.

Variants

Wood Pigeon

“There pigeons inhabit vast regions all throughout Hyrule, so they can often be found in forests, grasslands, and even villages. They don't have a very strong sense of awareness, so even less-skilled hunters can nab them pretty easily.”
Hyrule Compendium

The most common and least intelligent type of pigeon, wood pigeons can be found throughout the grasslands, forests, or even villages of Hyrule. They are the first pigeon species that Link encounter as they live on the Great Plateau in the Forest of Spirits and near the Woodcutter's House occasionally perching on ruins, logs, or rocks. They also walk along the ground. They are most commonly found in the Great Hyrule Forest and Hyrule Ridge regions. These birds are grey in colour, with a light grey underbelly and purple head and neck as well as small pink section between the purple and their light grey underbelly. Though they lack a strong sense of awareness they are smart enough to flee from danger though their sense of awareness is inferior to that of a Sparrow thus Link can kill them more easily as they are less flighty and a bigger target making them good prey for inexperienced hunters though they take off more quickly than Herons or Crows. Their meat is of the lowest quality as they drop Raw Bird Drumsticks when killed with an Arrow, Shock Arrow, Boomerang, or Sword Beam. If killed with a burning arrow or Fire Arrow they will drop Roasted Bird Drumsticks. If killed with a Ice Arrow they will drop Frozen Bird Drumsticks. Their poultry is the same quality as poultry acquired from Crows, Duck, Herons, and Seagulls though all four species are generally easier to hunt than Wood pigeons.

Rainbow Pigeon

“This breed of pigeon is well known for its vivid feathers. They live mainly in the northern forests and grasslands of Hyrule. They're most fond of nuts and grains but won't pass up the occasional insect or earthworm if offered. Their meat is of a higher quality than a typical wood pigeon's.”
Hyrule Compendium

Found mainly throughout the Hyrule Ridge and Great Hyrule Forest regions, Rainbow Pigeons are famous for their colorful plumage, which is a vibrant purple overall with a yellow, red and orange underbelly. Their meat is of a higher quality than a typical wood pigeon's. As a result they drop Raw Bird Thighs when killed with an Arrow, Shock Arrow, Boomerang, or Sword Beam. If killed with a burning arrow or Fire Arrow they will drop Roasted Bird Thighs. If killed with an Ice Arrow they will drop Frozen Bird Thighs.

They are among the easiest pigeon to hunt as large flocks of them fly over Seres Scablands where they apparently nest in the large stone-like trees as these trees have several nests containing Bird Eggs implying Seres Scablands is a breeding ground and nesting sight for Rainbow Pigeons. Unlike pigeons encountered on the ground, flying Rainbow Pigeons are not bothered by Link's presence thus Link doesn't have to be stealthy to hunt them. Link can climb to the top of the large trees where they nest and shoot them with his bow or jump off and draw his bow to initiate slow motion shooting allowing him to take out large numbers at a time. Additionally Link can raid their nests for Bird Eggs which thankfully has no effect on their population.

Hotfeather Pigeon

“This rare breed of pigeon lives near Death Mountain. Their fireproof feathers are valuable as clothing material. Their meat, on the other hand, is not fireproof, and it'll burn up as soon as it's struck.”
Hyrule Compendium

Hotfeather pigeons live in the Eldin province in the Eldin Canyon and Eldin Mountains regions near Death Mountain. They are mainly red in appearance with orange spots on their chest and grey wings and head, this plumage is fireproof and, according to the Hyrule Compendium, used by Hyruleans as a valuable clothing material. They generally live alongside Eldin Ostrich a large flightless bird also adapted to the harsh volcanic environment around Death Mountain. The two species even tolerate each others' presence and the same hunting strategies for hunting wild game for meat in volcanic areas apply to both species.

Their meat is of the same quality as a Rainbow Pigeon thus they drop Raw Bird Thighs when killed with an Arrow, Shock Arrow, Boomerang, or Sword Beam. If killed with a burning arrow or Fire Arrow they will drop Roasted Bird Thighs. If killed with an Ice Arrow they will drop Frozen Bird Thighs. In volcanic areas, Link should use Shock Arrows as regular arrows become burning arrows due to the heat causing them to burn. Link should also collect their meat quickly to prevent the volcanic heat from roasting Raw Bird Thighs, burning Roasted Bird Thighs, or burning up Frozen Bird Thighs. The Hyrule Compendium implies their meat will burn up immediately as soon as they are struck when in reality there is a brief grace period during which Link can collect it before the heat roasts or burns it completely. However their meat will roast automatically if hit with a burning arrow which is presumably what the compendium is referring to.

White Pigeon

“This white-feathered breed of pigeon lives in the Hebra region. It's said that a wood pigeon survived atop a snowy mountain by changing its feathers to blend in with the snow and soon after became a white pigeon. They have an extra layer of fat to guard against the cold, so they have been known to yield high-quality meat.”
Hyrule Compendium

White pigeons are, as their name suggests, almost entirely white, bar the gray spots over their chest and red rims around their eyes. They inhabit snowy regions such as Hebra Mountains, Tabantha Tundra, Gerudo Highlands, and Mount Lanayru region, where their white plumage and extra layer of fat helps them survive in the snow. They are most commonly found in the Gerudo Highlands and Hebra Mountains regions. They may be most closely related to wood pigeons as it is said that a wood pigeon survived atop a snowy mountain by changing its feathers to blend in with the snow and soon after became a white pigeon indicating they are descended from Wood Pigeons that adapted to living in cold mountains. Their meat is of the highest quality due to the extra layer of body fat they have for insulating them from the cold thus they drop either Raw Bird Thighs or rare Raw Whole Bird when killed with an Arrow, Shock Arrow, Boomerang, or Sword Beam. If killed with a burning arrow or Fire Arrow they will drop Roasted Bird Thighs or Roasted Whole Bird. If killed with an Ice Arrow they will drop Frozen Bird Thighs or Frozen Whole Bird. During cold weather such as snowstorms, Link should collect their raw meat before it freezes. Their meat is the same quality as an Eldin Ostrich as both drop "Prime" and "Gourmet" grade poultry.
