The pikmin are encountered by Captain Olimar in the first game in the series, ''Pikmin''. After crashing on the surface of a mysterious planet, Olimar meets the pikmin, who help him defeat enemies, and recover the pieces to his ship so he can leave the planet. In the sequel, ''Pikmin 2'', also for the Gamecube, Olimar returns the the planet with his sidekick Louie to gather treasure to pay off their company's debt.
