The Balkiries are enemies that originated from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. They are a group of mass-produced, bird/plane-based Badniks created by Dr. Eggman which are commonly used as air forces for the Eggman Empire. Balkiries made their first overall appearance in the 16-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Genesis, but their first Mario-related appearance was in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, Balkiries are featured as enemies in the Tokyo Sky Flight minigame. Here, their sprites are reused from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, albeit upscaled. During the minigame, Balkiries fly forward while firing projectiles at the playable characters. A Balkiry can be quickly defeated with one gunshot from the Tornado and will award the player 200 points upon being defeated.
