Kirby Super Star Ultra is a Nintendo DS game serving as a remake to Kirby Super Star. Like the original version, Kirby Super Star Ultra was developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo. It was released in 2008 in North America, Japan, and South Korea and in 2009 in Europe.

As with most remakes, Kirby Super Star Ultra features more content than in the original Kirby Super Star, most noticeably a few more modes. One of these modes is Helper to Hero, which is similar to the Boss Battles mode in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and has a character selection screen akin to the one within the Super Smash Bros. series.

References to the Mario franchise

Kirby Super Star Ultra retains its references to the Mario franchise, but most of them received slight changes.

  • Mario, Toad, Luigi, Wario, Toad, and Princess Peach are in the audience of the the King Dedede battle in Spring Breeze, with Wario replacing Birdo and Bowser from the original version and Princess Peach being given a more visible spot within the audience. Megaton Punch, having minimal difference to its appearance in Kirby Super Star, shows Bowser and Birdo instead of Wario.
  • Like in the original, a picture of Mario appears in the end credits for Milky Way Wishes, and has also been carried over to the end credits of the remake-exclusive mode, Revenge of the King.
  • Some of the Mario-related treasures in The Great Cave Offensive received some minor differences. The Turtle Shell was renamed to Koopa Shell and the Kong's Barrel shows the DK emblem like an actual DK Barrel. The Bucket from Mario & Wario did not receive any differences. Kirby Super Star Ultra renamed the Zebra Mask to the Phanto Mask, therefore adding a Mario reference.
  • Kirby can still use Stone Change to have a rare possibility of turning into a golden statue of Mario. Instead of giving the V sign like in Kirby Super Star, the statue instead shows Mario with his fist raised into the air.
  • Kabula was redesigned to have a Bullet Bill-like appearance, and one of its attacks involves shooting large Bullet Bill-like missiles at Kirby.
