He was created by Japanese video game designer [[Shigeru Miyamoto]] and also serves as the main mascot of [[Nintendo]]. Mario made his first appearance as the protagonist of the arcade game ''[[Donkey Kong (game)|Donkey Kong]]'', released in 1981.
