Monty Moles make their debut Super Mario World, being encountered in both Yoshi's Island 2 and Cookie Mountain. Monty Moles pop out of random spots in the ground to surprise Mario or Luigi and will either chase after them persistently or just walk around and hop occasionally (though the latter behavior was not seen in future titles). Monty Moles can easily be defeated by any attack method. Super Mario World also introduced a larger variant of Monty Mole named Mega Mole, which Mario or Luigi can ride on to get across obstacles. Despite this, Mega Moles can still damage Mario or Luigi. In some earlier builds of the game, Monty Moles had slightly different digging sprites from those in the final game.

Monty Moles appear as an enemy in Yoshi's Woolly World and its Nintendo 3Ds3DS remake, Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World, where they can be found in the levels Big Montgomery's Fort, Perils of the Perplexing Pyramid, Yoshi and Cookies, Big Montgomery's Bubble Fort, Woollet Bill's Last Ride, and Big Montgomery's Ice Fort. Monty Moles either burrow around underground (usually under carpets) or they can pop out of the wall and chase Yoshi like in Super Mario World. Yoshi can defeat a Monty Mole either with a yarn ball, stomping on them, or eating them. If eaten, Monty Moles will turn into orange yarn balls. There is also a boss called Big Montgomery, which is a bigger Monty Mole who was enlarged by Kamek that appears as the mid-boss of Worlds 1, 3, and 5. Monty Moles also appear as support enemies for Big Montgomery's second and third battles. Monty Mole Patches are also found and are sentient drawings of Monty Moles that, when unraveled, will start chasing Yoshi like a normal Monty Mole. In the Scrapbook Theater, a normal Monty Mole pops out of a scarf roll and runs around the stage.

Yoshi's Crafted World
Monty Moles reappear in Yoshi's Crafted World as enemies in the levels Spring Sprung Trail, Monty-Mole-B-Gone, Haunted Maker Mansion, Jumping for Victory, and The Countdown Begins, usually walking or digging around the foreground or background in the levels they appear in. Yoshi can defeat the Monty Moles the same way he can in other games. Monty Moles play a notable role in the level Monty-Mole-B-Gone, where Yoshi has to defeat as many Monty Moles as he can in order to receive all of the Smiley Flowers. Their larger counterparts also make their debut in the Yoshi series. In some levels that Monty Moles appear in, Yoshi can hit a red Time Cloud to begin a timed mini challenge where Yoshi has to defeat all the Monty Moles (and a big Monty Mole) that appear in the background in order to receive a Smiley Flower. In the world map for Origami Gardens, a giant spring-like Monty Mole can be seen moving up and down above where the level Monty-Mole-B-Gone is. Some cardboard Monty Moles also make a cameo as circus spectator crafts in the level Hoop-Jump Hop along with cardboard Shy Guys.

Nintendo Adventure Books
Although Mega Moles appear frequently in the Nintendo Adventure Books, Monty Moles only appear once as a cameo in one of the puzzles from Dinosaur Dilemma when Mario is being chased by the Mega Moles in the cellar of the haunted mansion. The two Monty Moles seen in the puzzle have no effect to the story. They also reuse their Super Mario World artwork.
