Super Thwomp

A Super Thwomp from Mario Kart 7.
First appearance Super Mario Kart (1992)
Latest appearance Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (2017)
Species origin Thwomp

A Super Thwomp (also called a Rainbow Thwomp) is a rainbow variety of a Thwomp that appears to be enhanced by a Starman. They appear on the SNES Rainbow Road in Super Mario Kart as well as the course's remakes in Mario Kart 7, Mario Kart 8, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Unlike a regular Thwomp, Super Thwomps can knock out players who simply collide with them and can make the track wobble.

History

Super Mario Kart

Koopa Troopa drifts to avoid some Super Thwomps, but he's going to fall off the edge.

Super Thwomps first appear in Super Mario Kart where they wobble the track upon landing. They only appear in Rainbow Road and unlike standard Thwomps can actually knock over racers who collide with them.

Mario Kart 7

Super Thwomps reappear in Mario Kart 7 in the game's remake of SNES Rainbow Road. Unlike their previous appearance however, the Super Thwomps have now been given a Rainbow appearance to distinguish them from a standard Thwomp. They can also flip players over more intensely.

Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

A pretty-yet-deadly Super Thwomp on SNES Rainbow Road.

Super Thwomps reappear in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in their remake of SNES Rainbow Road found in the DLC's Triforce Cup however, the Super Thwomps this time can cause more intense wobbles and the effects of being squished also slow any racers down further.

Trivia

  • Likely because of hardware limitations, the Mario Kart: Super Circuit version of SNES Rainbow Road did not include Super Thwomps but rather standard Thwomps.
  • The newer-designed Super Thwomps look like they have been enhanced by a Starman. This would explain their ability to spin opponents around easily.
