The marketing was really bad and barely showed anything interesting, the voice acting from what I heard sounded extremely generic and felt like they were only voice acted by celebrities just for the sake of it (unlike something like Shrek), and the character designs looked pretty off (especially the Koopa Troopas). I am also pretty sure that the movie only does surface level references and is extremely generic otherwise, and I am pretty sure the movie just overuses like the same 7 enemy species (outside of the rare kind of obscure one here and there) with little to no variety (like they couldn’t even get the Monty Mole species, yet they could include THE FREAKING SUPER MARIO GALAXY BATS IN A POSTER (despite it not even making any sense, because Super Mario Galaxy implied that most of the unique species there are just exclusive to space, and I don’t even like that game anyways)). I know some people like the movie, and that is perfectly fine, but if you want to rant about the movie like me, then we can go all out. Also mild spoilers here: but I heard the post credits scene is literally just showing Yoshi and nothing else (because they think a common recurring Mario character being in a Mario movie is SOOOO shocking). If they ever make a sequel, I hope it is at least decent, since I felt like stuff like the DIC Mario cartoons were so much more superior. No harm in being bold and trying entirely different actors that no one has heard of before. Interesting that you mention the DiC cartoons as I've also been telling various people that if they had followed the format of the DiC cartoons, that would have been better. Then there's the approach of trying to market it to moviegoers in general, and from what it looks, they want to include whatever reached pop culture status, as referencing games like ''Mario Clash'' for Virtual Boy or ''Mario Superstar Baseball'' would not be understood by most moviegoers, so they settle upon referencing mainly the ''Super Mario'' series (and ''Donkey Kong'' arcade game). ::::::::::::::::::::Granted, the Super Show was kind of all over the place (likely due to the Mario series being in its infancy at the time), but the later two Mario cartoons they made felt much better, as they took full advantage of the game they were based on and didn’t have to heavily rely on cheap pop culture references. The Super Mario Bros. Movie just feels like they only wanted to play it safe for the sake of marketing, as the fact that they did get Charles to be in the movie and have him not voice Mario is really stupid (it is like if a SpongeBob movie had Tom Kenny as a supporting role, but not the voice of SpongeBob). Also they didn’t really do anything interesting with the references, such as the Mario Kart stuff being the absolutely most barebones stuff about the game, and some random power-ups like the Super Bell just for the sake of references (that is why I also hate the two live action Sonic movies, even if those movies are FAR worse cause they are far more surface level). I personally think that another Mario cartoon would have been far better, as that gives more possibilities to do more obscure stuff more than a movie (just like the DiC cartoons). Also, doesn’t the movie basically contradict and retcon a lot of stuff from the preexisting lore (which didn’t happen with the DiC cartoons and the manga)? Also, what do you think of the absolute generic and barebones enemy roster that the movie has, isn’t it just spamming generic species like Koopa Troopas with little to no variety (outside of the minor appearance of a more obscure species like Bramball)? The worst thing about the movie is the lack of species variety, because from what I seen and heard about, the movie overuses the same 5 generic enemy species (especially Koopa Troopas), with the very rare appearance of another more obscure species every so often, but other than that it is just spamming the same generic species for like every scene with little to no variety just for sheer laziness. The reason is because in the Wii U/PC version, the BFBs require multiple hits to defeat, do not contain any animals, and the player automatically completes the stage upon the BFB being defeated. No regular enemies have all three of these traits, so it is safe to assume that the BFB is a miniboss similar to the ones seen in Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic Mania. In the 3DS version, the BFBs do drop animals upon defeat, which makes them standard enemies in the 3Ds version of the game. You sort of agree that the Super Mario Wiki has been recently using the subject origin sections in incorrect ways (since it is mainly to show what real life animal/plant/object/etc the character is based on, not if they are comparable to another existing enemy (since that is what the comparable thing is for)). A good example of this is the wiki saying that Monty was intentionally derived from Rocky Wrench (despite the fact that the both of them are from two completely unrelated species and their only similarity is a vaguely similar attack pattern), which I feel like that and the Mario Portal incorrectly referring to Monty as Rocky Wrench might make the wiki think the Undergrunt species is related to Monty Mole (even though that is not the case). Wonder'' makes it feel like a mobile game, and the Wonder Flower effects are mostly just throwing random garbage at the wall to see what sticks (usually making the levels even worse when activating them), but there are some other issues as well such as the awful bland level design that is incredibly downgraded compared to what we had in the ''New Super Mario Bros.'' games (mostly to make the awful Wonder Flower gimmicks), easily the worst enemy roster of any mainline ''Mario'' title period (with numerous recurring staples being not i ley absent in favor of only the really basic enemies (with very few exceptions) and the new enemies either being really mediocre and forgettable with nothing that makes them standout, or some of the worst enemies in the entire franchise), only having two pretty damn bad bosses, the airship levels easily being the worst airships in the entire franchise, and the last few levels of the game (the last three before the final boss) being some of the most poorly designed and unfun levels in the entire franchise (with the last level especially just being random garbage thrown at you with no rhyme or reason, kind of like the rest of the game). It sucks since ''Super Mario Bros. Wonder'' had potential to be an amazing game, but what we got was an abysmal gimmicky mess that is incredibly bland and annoying to play through (not to mention how some people act like it is the best ''Mario'' game of all time, when in reality it is easily one of the worst ones). I seriously do not get why ''Super Mario Bros. Wonder'' gets all the praise and attention for being a pile of overrated garbage while ''Sonic Superstars'' gets hated on despite it having far more positives than ''Super Mario Bros. I think you have a very good way of describing things. While I haven't analyzed ''Super Mario Bros. Wonder'' to the extent that you have (I've decided to pass on it), I do think that it does feel like things being thrown at a wall until they can find something that sticks. THIS is why fangame developers matter: eventually, something is going to hit the point of the same ideas being regurgitated and eaten again by the same people, unless they are willing to expand their creativity, including to people who may know the franchise EVEN MORE than they do. Throwing something until it sticks never ever does it for me; one has to have a proper basis or inspiration, like ''Super Mario Sunshine'' is an inspired and great game.
