Purple Yoshi using an arrow wheel in Furious Fred de Fillet's Castle in Yoshi's New Island

Arrow wheels[1] (also known as spinning wheels[2] and Arrow Lifts[3]) is a recurring type of object in the Yoshi franchise, particularly the Yoshi's Island series. They are round, spinning objects with arrows on them. Arrow wheels make their first appearance in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

If a Yoshi jumps on an arrow wheel, it stops spinning and starts moving in the direction the arrow is pointing. However, it can change its direction if the Yoshi jumps on it again or if the object hits a surface. Arrow wheels can also be grabbed with the Yoshi's tongue and spat out. Arrow wheels come in two colors: tan, which is the most common, and blue. The difference between these two types of arrow wheels are that the blue arrow wheels disappear if a Yoshi jumps off one and does not ride it again for a while, returning to its original position. The only way to prevent its disappearance is to grab it with the Yoshi's tongue and spit it out. If he brings one close to the Goal Ring and jumps through it, the arrow wheel will turn into beads. Arrow wheels are mainly found within the various castles and fortresses across Yoshi's Island. In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, arrow wheels first appear in the level Salvo The Slime's Castle.

While arrow wheels do not appear in Mario Hoops 3-on-3, they do appear in the Adobe Flash game Superstar Shootout. Here, they are light blue in color and sport a yellow arrow. Unlike the Yoshi games, the arrow wheels cannot be traveled on, and their main purpose is affecting which direction the basketball travels. Some arrow wheels remain in a fixed position while others constantly spin around, affecting their aim. Upon touching an arrow wheel, the basketball moves in the direction its arrow is pointed, which can either help the basketball reach the basket or deflect it away from the basket. Likewise, many Coins and Red Coins are placed between the arrow wheels, which can either help Mario collect them or deflect the basketball away from them.

If you jump, the wheel will begin spinning again. Tap the B Button slightly to control your direction. Brown spinning wheels keep you aloft as long as you want, but blue ones disintegrate after a brief period of time. Yoshi can grab and hold a spinning wheel in his mouth, then spit it out elsewhere."
