Burning goop, also known as Red gunk,[1] hot gunk,[2] Lava,[3] or Molten goop,[4] is a lava-like goop that appears in Super Mario Sunshine, in which it only appears in the level Pianta Village. Burning goop is red-orange in color, and it releases a small burst of flame periodically. Burning goop burns Mario on contact and sends him flying upward, just like lava or fire would. If Mario gets caught in the middle of a large quantity of burning goop, he likely loses an extra life or sustains heavy damage, as he flies upward before falling back down, only moving slightly in the process.

Burning goop covering a large portion of Pianta Village during the episode The Goopy Inferno

In the first episode, Chain Chomplets Unchained, burning goop is produced by feverish Chain Chomplets. In the third episode, The Goopy Inferno, burning goop it covers almost the entire level and Mario must save the Pianta mayor from the fiery inferno. Coo Coos fly around and drop burning goop during this episode. In the sixth episode, Piantas in Need, Mario has to rescue ten Piantas who are stuck in small puddles of burning goop. In the seventh episode, Shadow Mario Runs Wild, Shadow Mario leaves a trail of burning goop behind him as he runs.
