Burrobots are a mole-based Badnik from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise that debuted in the 16-bit Sonic the Hedgehog, where they attempt to attack Sonic and his allies by jumping out of the ground in front of his way. Despite being a somewhat recurring enemy in the Sonic series, Burrobots have only made one Mario-related appearance in the Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
In the Nintendo 3Ds version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Burrobots make a cameo appearance as walls during the Golf Plus event on Hole 9, where they use their sprite appearance from the 16-bit Sonic the Hedgehog game. If the playable character's golf ball hits a Burrobot wall, the Burrobot will disappear and the golf ball lands safely on the lawn without falling onto unfavorable terrain.
Trivia
- Coincidentally enough, Burrobots in their debut appearance share a very similar attack pattern to Monty Moles in the Mario franchise, as both are mole enemies that attack the player by attempting to ambush them by jumping out the ground.
- A relative to Monty Mole named Ragumo, who debuted in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins also has a drill which is very similar to Burrobot's drill (though this is also likely coincidental).
