Mario's forward aerial meteor smash in Super Smash Bros. Brawl

A meteor smash is an attack in the Super Smash Bros. series that causes the enemy to fly directly downwards when hit. Because of this, they are usually difficult, though not impossible, to recover from. Meteor smashes also have variations called spikes, which function the same in terms of knockback physics, but differ in the fact that they are completely impossible to recover from.

Super Smash Bros.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, players can tell if a move is a meteor smash if the opponent can cancel the downward knockback after being hit. There are also some bonuses earned, which involve meteor smashes.

Fighters

Items

Certain items and Pokémon also have meteor smash properties, including:

Some of Master Hand and Crazy Hand's attacks are also capable of meteor smashing in this game.

Meteor Smash bonuses

Name Description Points
Meteor Smash KO'd foe with a Meteor Attack. 800
Meteor Clear Cleared the level with a Meteor Attack. 3000
Meteor Master Every Meteor Attack KO'd an opponent. (Minimum of 2) 8000
Meteor Survivor Succeeded in recovering from a Meteor Attack. 2000
Flying Meteor Hit a flying enemy with a Meteor Attack. 4000

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, meteor smashes are harder to cancel, and there are no bonuses involving them; bonuses aren't awarded or recorded in this game. Also, the Footstool Jump acts as a meteor smash as well.

Fighters

Items

Like in the previous game, certain items, Poké Ball Pokémon, and Assist Trophies have moves that contain meteor smash features. These include:

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, characters that are meteor smashed onto a floor will bounce back up. It also allows players to tech even if they were standing on the ground, and several Final Smash attacks make use of this change. In addition, stronger meteor smashes are now denoted by a unique sound effect upon connection. In addition, meteor smashes can no longer be canceled, though to compensate hitstun does not last as long when used on opponents with lower damage percentages.
