Rexons are large, purple Badniks designed after plesiosaurs. They made their first overall appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Genesis and their first Mario-related appearance in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, Rexons are encountered in the Tokyo Sky Flight mini-game. Here, Rexons reuse their sprites from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Genesis, but are a lot larger, with their size taking up most of the screen's height. Rexons spit out fireballs to try and attack the playable characters. A Rexon can be defeated with any of the Tornado's armaments, but it can take a lot of damage before getting destroyed. Whenever a Rexon is defeated, the player receives 1,000 points.
