The Sun is a large star that orbits around Earth in both the Mario franchise and in real life. It is also featured in several other settings within the Mario franchise. On the planet, it appears as a shining white light, but in outer space it appears as a yellowish, orange-like and light lemon color. In most of its appearances, the sun is only part of the scenery, and it serves no other purpose.

In Super Mario 64 and its Nintendo DS remake, Super Mario 64 DS, there is a hexagonal panel resembling the Sun on the floor in the lobby of Peach's Castle. Sunlight shines on this panel from above when Mario gets 10 Power Stars. If he looks into the sun, he will be transported to the Tower of the Wing Cap.

In Super Mario Sunshine the Sun has a plot-essential role. To reach Noki Bay, Mario has to look up at the Sun in front of the water fountain, similar to how the Tower of the Wing Cap is accessed in Super Mario 64. In Pianta Village, Mario can get a Shine Sprite by squirting the Sun with F.L.U.D.D. from the top of the large tree in the center of the area.

"SUN" appears as a license plate in the Mario Kart: Double Dash!! course named Mushroom Bridge. It appears on the bus that has "Peach Beach" written on it.

In the Club Nintendo comic "Donkey Kong in: Banana Day 24," giant aliens pull the Earth away from the Sun, resulting in a drop of temperature on the planet.
