I was wondering if we should split the Presenters from the remake and the original because Play Nintendo called the ones in the remake as just Monty Moles. So I was thinking, should we keep the page as is (and maybe add the Play Nintendo thing as a trivia point), or put the remake Presenters as Monty Moles while the Presenters from the original will still keep their page? Splitting them sounds fine since they ones in the remake were officially referred to as Monty Moles in the remake (not to mention the different appearances) so sure, go ahead! HannahMontanaFan (talk) 08:31, October 12, 2022 (UTC)

Are Presenters and Monty Moles (in the remake) actually the same?

I know that I was the one that suggested that the Monty Moles in the Nintendo 3DS remake for Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga were not Presenters, but after further consideration, it is a lot more complicated than I thought.

Starting with the evidence that supports that these two are different, the main reason on why I split these two in the first place was because of Play Nintendo explicitly stating that the "Presenters" in the remake are Monty Moles, which is the ONLY official source I could find even discussing those Monty Moles in the 3DS remakes (not even any Japanese guidebooks or anything). Presenters themselves were never referred to as Monty Moles from my knowledge, as a Japanese guidebook was the one that gave us their name in the first place, and the English guidebooks generically referred to them as moles. There are also some subtle implications that the two are different due to their designs, as in the remake, the Monty Moles are basically just standard Monty Moles with bowties, whereas the Presenters from the original game have a distinctive Mega Mole-like design instead. I know Mawful Mole also had a redesign in the BIS remake, but the difference between Mawful Mole and Presenter is that BIS already had standard Monty Moles in the form of the Monty Bros., whereas Superstar Saga only had Presenters as the main Monty Mole species in that game (at least initially). It also doesn’t help the fact that the Superstar Saga remake was known for replacing characters with generic versions of that species (Ankoopa being replaced with a larger Koopa Troopa is a good example of what I mean). Also, another interesting fact is that the Monty Bros. above ground sprites in the BIS remake are clearly taken from the Monty Moles from the Superstar Saga remake (just without the bowtie). So with an official source stating that the Monty Moles in the remake are just Monty Moles, in addition to the other things such as the designs being drastically different, shouldn’t it be obvious that these two are completely separate? Actually, there is one point that sort of throws a wrench into this belief.

The main reason why I made this discussion in the first place is the fact that in the files for the remake, the Monty Moles are still internally referred to as Presenters (despite what I just said). While I did initially think that this might have just been an early filename where the Monty Moles were going to be Presenters at some point in development before being changed to Monty Moles in the last minute (similar to how Morty Mole was internally referred to as Mega Mole in the files for Super Mario 3D Land), and while this could be possible, there is also the fact that this does not apply for other characters who got replaced in the remake (such as the larger Koopa Troopas who replaced Ankoopa being referred to as giant Koopa Troopas in the files instead of just Ankoopa for example) so this might be an intentional choice rather than something from a planned inclusion of Presenter. Another piece of evidence that is against the claim that these two are different is how a filename directly saying the Monty Moles in the remake are Presenters could be a lot more of a reliable source than a website saying that they are Monty Moles (since while it is an official source that is nowhere near as unreliable as something like the infamous Mario Portal, the people at Play Nintendo never developed the game and they could have easily mistaken the Presenters in the remakes as Monty Moles due to their similar design to them). Considering info on Presenter/Monty Mole in Superstar Saga is pretty scarce, it is unknown what the creator’s true intentions for this character truly were.

Overall, there is a lot of good evidence that both supports and opposes the idea of the Presenters and Monty Moles in the remake being two different entities. What do you all think, do you think they are the same or are these two different? MontyMoleLoreMaster (talk) 21:33, February 4, 2024 (UTC)
