Bombshell Koopas,[1] originally known as Nokobon[2] or Nobokon,[3] are a species of Koopa Troopas with a bomb as their shell in Super Mario Land.

In Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, normal Koopa Troopas appear as enemies, and Bombshell Koopas themselves are succeeded by a Buzzy Beetle-like variant, Noko Bombette, whose name is a reference to the original Nokobon. (Bombshell Koopas were only referred to as such in the 2011 port of Super Mario Land to the Virtual Console, almost twenty years after Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins was released for Game Boy.)

History

Super Mario Land

In Super Mario Land, Bombshell Koopas are the most common enemy, appearing in every level except World 2-3 and World 4-3. Like Red Koopa Troopas, Bombshell Koopas do not walk off edges, but merely pace back and forth on the platform. Bombshell Koopas are not immune to Superballs, and they explode shortly after being stomped. They do not explode if a Superball is used on them. They are somewhat similar to the recurring Bob-ombs, except they cannot be moved and their blast radius is small and cannot take out other enemies and obstacles.

Wario appearances

WarioWare Gold

In WarioWare Gold, a Bombshell Koopa appears in the second level of the microgame Super Mario Land.

Appearances in other media

Super Mario Land manga

In the Super Mario Land manga, Bombshell Koopas are the second enemy type met by Mario and Mekakuribō (after the Goombos). Mario stomps on them and they turn into bombs, confusing Mario enough to get hit by their explosions. In the last chapter, a Goombo steals a magical seal from the Chai Kingdom temple that prevented it from being attacked by Pionpi, and tosses it to an exploding Bombshell Koopa, destroying it, in the hope that the Pionpi bite the heroes sheltered in the palace.
