Super Mario 3D Land
Tail Goombas make their first appearance in Super Mario 3D Land, where they attack like Tanooki Mario. They jump into the air and flutter down to the ground slowly, and perform a tail whip when they land. They are defeated like normal Goombas and Mario can take their Super Leaf after defeat. Some species of Tail Goombas jump into the air towards Mario, trying to catch him with a tail whip. There are also Grand Tail Goombas, larger variants of Tail Goombas. A late beta also featured golden variants of Tail Goombas. They attacked in the same manner as the normal variants, but flew further.Defeating a Tail Goomba gives the player one coin, but some may also give a player a Super Leaf.

- Tail Goombas seem to resemble the Tanoombas from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions however while Tanoombas are a hybrid between a Goomba and a Tanooki, a Tail Goomba only has a Tanooki Tail.
- Tail Goombas are among the few enemies from Super Mario 3D Land to not return in Super Mario 3D World. Instead, it seems they've been replaced by Cat Goombas.
