A Piranha Bud[citation needed] is the juvenile state of a Piranha Plant and the state that comes after Nipper Plant. They resemble regular Piranha Plants, but are of a smaller size and have smaller mouths. They often appear alongside their adult forms and serve as a distraction to the player. A few variants of Piranha Buds have appeared within the Mario franchise and the Yoshi's Island series.

History

Yoshi's Island series

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

A variant of the Piranha Bud, called Naval Bud, appears during the events of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Along with their adult form, Naval Piranha, they inhabit bodies of water. Naval Buds are fought in Level 3-8 of the game, after Kamek uses his magic to enlarge Naval Piranha.

Yoshi's Island DS

Another variant of the Piranha Bud, called the Bungee Bud, is featured in Yoshi's Island DS. Like most Piranha Buds, they appear alongside their adult forms, in this case Bungee Piranha. Bungee Buds drop from the ceiling to try and separate Yoshi from the baby he is carrying.

Paper Mario

A Lava Bud

The Lava Buds featured in Paper Mario are lava-dwelling plants that appear in chapter 5 inside the Volcano of Lavalava Island. They are encountered during the boss fight against Lava Piranha. They can be attacked and stunned if hit enough, but will always be revived as long as the main plant is still intact. After the main plant receives enough damage, the second phase of the battle will start and the Lava Buds will be set on fire, meaning that Mario takes damage if he jumps on them without a protecting Badge. Sushie's Squirt and Tidal Wave moves have the ability to put out the fire.

Tetris Attack

The Naval Bud subspecies of the Piranha Buds reappear in Tetris Attack. They are encountered at the tenth level of Easy Vs. mode, once again alongside Naval Piranha.
