Variant of Monty Mole
“I can't tell you how horrible it feels to have Monty Moles biting at my roots in this dark place!”
Petunia, Paper Mario

Monty Moles are a stronger variant of the species of the same name that can be found exclusively in the Flower Fields from Paper Mario. These Monty Moles are green in color and stronger than their regular counterparts who appear at Mt. Rugged in the same game. Despite their differences, the two species are both simply called "Monty Moles" in the English version of the game and various English guidebooks.[1] However, the Monty Moles from Flower Fields were given a unique name in Japanese, which heavily implies that they are a unique variant. The Monty Moles from Flower Fields are also implied to have originated from Mt. Rugged as standard Monty Moles, but when they started to eat the roots of Petunia after migrating, they had gained much more health points than the Monty Moles back in Mt. Rugged.[1]

Mario encounters these Monty Moles when he goes to see Petunia, who tells him they are digging up the ground where she lives, eating her seeds and biting her roots. At her behest, Mario defeats all the Monty Moles. After defeating all the Monty Moles, Mario receives the Magical Bean from Petunia for helping her.

The Monty Moles function the exact same as their Mt. Rugged counterparts, with the only major difference being the increased health. When a Monty Mole is defeated, they can occasionally drop a Honey Syrup. These Monty Moles also have a specific weakness to the Hammer Throw attack, which will deal 3 more damage than a normal hammer strike. They are the only enemies in the entire game with this weakness.[2] If Mario or one of his partners attempts to First Strike a Monty Mole before talking to Petunia for the first time, they will hide underground and dodge the attack.

Profiles

  • Tattle: "This is a Monty Mole. You remember Monty Moles from Mt. Rugged, don't you? Max HP: 12, Attack Power: 3, Defense Power: 0 They're vicious rock-throwers. They may look intimidating but they're not very strong."
  • Nintendo Player's Guide: "You'll encounter Monty Mole again in Petunia's garden, and eating all those tasty roots has been good for him. His Heart Points are much higher than the Monty Moles on Mt. Rugged, but luckily for Mario his attack remains rather weak."[1]
