Flame Chomps[1][2][3][4] (named Fire Chomps[5][6][7][8][9] in earlier appearances), are enemies that resemble Chain Chomps. First, they are not restricted by chains, instead floating along with a tail made of fire. At any time, they may shoot fireballs at Mario or Luigi. The fireballs are taken directly out of their four-fireball tail. When all four have been fired, the Fire Chomp will self-destruct, damaging the Mario brother if he's within the blast radius, Amps have the same face as Fire Chomps. Also, unlike Chain Chomps, they are vulnerable to stomps and (ironically) Fire Mario/Luigi's fireballs. They live mainly in the skies.

History

Super Mario Bros. 3

In Super Mario Bros. 3, Fire Chomps only appear in Worlds 5 and 6. They float along as Mario and Luigi navigate the stage, harrying Mario's progress on the small platforms, especially in World 5-9, where the player has a limited amount of platforms he can jump onto in addition to an automatically-scrolling screen. They can be defeated with stomps, fireballs, hammers, Starman, and tail whacks.

The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3

Several Fire Chomps from The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3.

Fire Chomps made several appearances in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, such as in the episode "The Beauty of Kootie", where several Fire Chomps act as crew members on Bowser's Doomship.

Super Mario 64 DS

In the remake, Super Mario 64 DS, Fire Chomps replace Fire Spitters. They remain motionless and have the same effect as them, shooting a flame at Mario when he approaches, and they can be eaten by Yoshi, allowing him to breathe fire. Because of their replacing Fire Spitters, it is the first, and so far, only appearance of them where they don't self-destruct after running out of fire.

Nintendo Adventure Books

A Fire Chomp appears in Koopa Capers, prowling a cave in the Magma Pits. While Luigi is fleeing from the Hot Feet that also live in the cave, he can choose to either rush blindly ahead, or take his time; if he chooses the latter, he will just narrowly avoid the Fire Chomp, but if he picks the former, he will run into and be scorched by the fireballs of the Fire Chomp, causing a Game Over.

New Super Mario Bros.

A Flame Chomp spitting a fireball

Fire Chomps return in New Super Mario Bros., again with a four fireball limit. They only appeared in World 7-1. They can be defeated by just jumping on their heads. Unlike Chain Chomps, which are almost invincible (bar a few techniques and powers of special characters), Flame Chomps can safely be jumped upon. Doing so knocks them out of the sky. Once they run out of fireballs, they explode like Bob-ombs.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Flame Chomps were a bit more common, appearing in World 2-6, World 8-3, and World 9-6. Flame Chomps have the same attack pattern as in the previous game but have now developed a new attack in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. When this enemy runs out of fire, it will flash red and self-destruct seconds later, but not before chasing Mario much faster than it was originally doing. They can be defeated with a single jump like in the previous game, but oddly enough they can be defeated with fireballs.

In New Super Mario Bros. 2, Flame Chomps exclusively appear in World 6-B. It acts exactly the same as in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, when this enemy runs out of fire, it flashes red and self-destruct seconds later. They can be defeated with a single jump or with fireballs, just like in the previous games.

New Super Mario Bros. U

the only Flame Chomp guarding a Star Coin

In New Super Mario Bros. U, there is only one Flame Chomp in the entire game, located in a hidden room in Peach's Castle-3: Rising Tides of Lava. It must be bounced off of to obtain the stage's final Star Coin.

New Super Luigi U

Flame Chomps also appear in New Super Luigi U. In this game, it is shown that Flame Chomps can use up all of their fireballs on their "tail" to create a much larger fireball. Flame Chomp Ferris Wheel, as its name implies, have Flame Chomps as the key enemy.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

Flame Chomps return in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe with the exact same role as in it's two predecessors.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS

Flame Chomps appear in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS as enemies in the exclusive Smash Run mode. Like in previous games, they breathe fireballs at the player and explode shortly after losing all of their fireballs. The fire trail can also damage the player if they run into it.

Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition

Flame Chomps are enemies who can become allies to the player in Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition. A Flame Chomp's attribute is Fire, meaning that it is powerless against Water, yet strong to Wood. Flame Chomps have relatively high HP and they are very efficient in regenerating their team's health points. Instead, their attack point rating is a little poor. The main skill of any Flame Chomp in the game is called Flame Dance, which increases the attack rating of every Fire-type team mate by 1.3 for five turns. Flame Chomps also have a secondary skill, the Skill Boost; when the player enters a course, this skill helps by reducing the number of turns till the main skill can be used.

Other appearances

In the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack in Minecraft, Blazes are replaced by Fire Chomps.

Trivia

  • Due to the Fire Chomp replacing the Fire Spitters in Super Mario 64 DS, Super Mario 64 DS has more Fire Chomps than any game in the Mario series. In most games, Fire Chomps are found only in one level, sometimes a few more (or in the case of New Super Mario Bros. U, there's only one in the whole game).
