Nightmare (also referred to as Nightmare Wizard) is a major antagonist in the Kirby series, appearing as the final boss of both Kirby's Adventure and its remake, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. In both games, Nightmare tried to plunge the realm of Dream Land into darkness, but he was defeated by the combined forces of King Dedede and Kirby wielding the power of the Star Rod.

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, Nightmare appears as an Assist Trophy and was first shown off in a Miiverse post by Masahiro Sakurai.[1] He takes on his Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land appearance. When summoned, Nightmare will first appear in his Orb Form before flying to the top of the screen. After a few seconds, he will immediately appear in the background of the stage while cackling. He will enlarge himself as he shrouds the stage in darkness. During this time, the entire screen will be black, confusing both players and CPU opponents. Several seconds later, the darkness will slowly fade away, along with Nightmare.

This ball of nightmares came from the Fountain of Dreams, taking nightmares to all of Dream Land. King Dedede sealed it away by shattering the Star Rod, but it was revived when the Star Rod was restored by Kirby. In Smash Bros., it hides the stage and the fighters in pure darkness.
