Shadow Bugs are a strange kind of creatures in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, resembling round dark balls. The Halberd stores all the Shadow Bugs and releases them across the Smash World. When a lot of Shadow Bugs form together, they can create Primids and other enemies. Shadow Bugs, when they come in contact with trophies, can create another clone of the trophy. This clone is an evil side of the original character, and appear as the character with a purple tint. Shadow Bugs originate from Mr. Game & Watch, and an unlimited amount can be taken out from his body. When Tabuu learned of this, he used Mr. Game & Watch to create the Subspace Army. The Shadow Bugs are first seen in the Midair Stadium.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Shadow Bugs appear as an Advanced-class support spirit, using their previous trophy render. It occupies one support slot and any fighter that uses it will start battles with increased attack power but with 30% damage. The spirit's puppet fighters are four Mr. Game & Watches on the Omega form of the Pokémon Stadium stage. Aside from the Spirit Board, the spirit may also be available in Beedle's Tent, where it can be purchased for 1,000 Spirit Points.
Embodiments of a primordial substance that can take the form of any number of lesser Subspace foes. They can also copy the forms of trophies to create evil doppelganger versions of them. The mysterious substance inside Mr. Game & Watch can be extracted endlessly. Once Tabuu discovered this, he used Mr. Game & Watch to create the Subspace Army.
