Background
Before the events of the game, the Ancient Minister is known as R.O.B. and he is the leader of the R.O.B. race of robots. R.O.B.'s official title is the "Master Robot". He and the other robots lived on the floating Isle of Ancients and watch over this world. Indeed, R.O.B. is the overseer of this world and is considered the world's "lord." However, this world is eventually invaded by Tabuu, a humanoid entity from Subspace. He attacks the Isle of Ancients, deactivating many R.O.B.s and eventually taking the robots hostage. R.O.B. is forced to ally himself with Tabuu in order to prevent the deaths of more of his robot brethren. It's at this time that he began to hide under his ceremonial robes of mourning and assume the name "Ancient Minister". The Isle of Ancients is converted into The Subspace Bomb Factory and the Ancient Minister becomes the commander of the Subspace Army. As the commander of the army, he leads the invasion of this world on behalf of Tabuu.
Ruler of the World
Back then, he and the other minsters of this world (the Smash Bros. World) lived in a floating island. The Ancient Minister was the ruler of the world and he watched all the trophies fight. However, soon, Tabuu attacks the world and kills all the other ministers (R.O.B.) of the world. The Ancient Minister and the remaining robots then are left very depressed as some of their friends have died. The Ancient Minister grows so depressed he decides that the world isn't important anymore and attempts to destroy the whole Smash Bros. World while killing all of his robots. However, the trophies of the world do not like the fact that he is trying to destroy everything and team up to stop him.

He escapes from Mario and Pit, fights Marth, Meta Knight and Ike in a desert, fights Mario, Pit, Kirby, Yoshi and Link in the same desert and destroys King Dedede's Castle by sending it into Subspace. However, later, Samus and Pikachu enter the factory that the Ancient Minister andt he other Ministers used to be in. However, Ancient Minister is very sad and refuses to fight with Samus and Pikachu. Samus lowers her arm cannon as Donkey Kong, Captain Falcon, Pikachu and Captain Olimar enter. The Ancient Minister still refuses a fight but then Ganondorf appears as a hologram. The Ganondorf hologram is able to get all the R.O.B.s in his side and the R.O.B.s betray the Ancient Minister and attack him. They burn his clothes and leave the Ancient Minister suffering with fire.
The Ancient Minister first appears in the Subspace Emissary after Mario and Kirby's match at the Midair Stadium, where he detonates a Subspace Bomb, sending the stadium to Subspace. The Ancient Minister escapes, only to be later chased by Mario and Pit in The Plains, who have little success catching him. He then detonates another Subspace Bomb at The Battlefield Fortress, attracting the attention of Marth, Meta Knight, and Ike. Regardless of the group's efforts, he manages to escape their grasp, however, he is soon discovered by Mario and Pit once again, along with Link and Yoshi. Again, the Ancient Minister escapes, but not before detonating yet another Subspace Bomb, sending King Dedede's Castle into Subspace.

The R.O.B.s then bring out Subspace Bombs and activate them. Ganondorf then sends enemies to attack but the Ancient Minister, still in flames, fires them with lasers. The Ancient Mnister rips his flaming clothes off revealing what is behind the Minister's clothes. Like the other ministers, he is a R.O.B. He then decides to not destroy the world after all and teams up with the gang to stop Ganondorf. However, the gang still has to escape from the Subspace Bombs. Diddy tries telling R.O.B., the Ancient Minister, to command his R.O.B.s to stop the bombs but R.O.B. shakes his head-it can't be done. Captain Falcon tells the gang to follow him.

Fighting Tabuu
The Ancient Minister isn't seen again until Samus Aran and Pikachu corner him at the Subspace Bomb Factory. Samus and Pikachu are ready to fight, but the Ancient Minister refuses, growing depressed at the amount of R.O.B.s sacrificed to activate the Subspace Bombs, confusing them. Soon after, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Captain Falcon, and Captain Olimar arrive, also battle-ready, but the Ancient Minister still refuses. A holographic Ganondorf appears, quickly realizing that he has betrayed him. Using a remote-controlled button, he is able to control the R.O.B.s, ordering them to attack the Ancient Minister and activate every Subspace Bomb in the factory.
Donkey Kong grabs the minister and takes him to the Falcon Flyer where the rest of the gang is. They fly off with Meta Ridley trying to slow them. The party is able to stop Meta Ridley from following them, and the Falcon Flyer leaves the island right as its sucked into Subspace. The Falcon Flyer lands at the desert where the rest of the party is. The Halberd, now with Snake, Meta Knight, Lucario, Princess Peach, Princess Zelda, Fox and Mr. Game & Watch on board (somehow Falco left the ship) arrives right next to the Falcon Flyer. The characters all reunite and they all fly to Bowser and Ganondorf's Doomship and try to stop them from destroying everything. Altough the Halberd is destroyed, the characters are able to survive by getting into all the other ships.

The Ancient Minister reveals himself to be another R.O.B. and alongside the other heroes, is able to defeat the Auroros and other Subspace Army members that Ganondorf summons to defeat them. Using the Falcon Flyer, the heroes escape the Subspace Bomb Factory before all of the Subspace Bombs detonate. From this point on, the Ancient Minister, now named R.O.B., joins the heroes in the fight against Tabuu.
After Kirby destroys the Doomship with Dragoon, the Falcon Flyer and all the others head into Subspace where they meet up with Tabuu. Altough Tabuu defeats them the first time, Luigi, King Dedede and Ness come in and revive everyone. The Ancient Minister is revived and if the player chooses him, he gets to finally fight Tabuu. The characters all defeat Tabuu and return the Smash World to peace.
