History

Super Mario-kun

Although no normal big Monty Moles appear in Super Mario-kun, two notable members to them do. These members being Super Choropū from volume 1 and Choropūko from volume 23.

Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS / Super Mario Maker 2

Normal big Monty Moles first appear in Super Mario Maker, its 3DS port, and its sequel Super Mario Maker 2 as placeable enemies. In these games, they can be made by giving a Super Mushroom to a Monty Mole. In all four main styles, big Monty Moles look and behave identically to the standard Monty Moles, with the only difference to them being that they are larger. Additionally, big Monty Moles are immune to being eaten by a Yoshi.

Yoshi's Crafted World

Some big Monty Moles in the Yoshi's Crafted World level Monty-Mole-B-Gone, with one of them being red from being damaged by Yoshi

Big Monty Moles make their debut in the Yoshi franchise in Yoshi's Crafted World. In this game, big Monty Moles appear in the levels Spring Sprung Trail, Monty-Mole-B-Gone, Haunted Maker Mansion, Jumping to Victory, and The Countdown Begins as semi-common enemies and are always found in the background of each level they're in. Unlike the smaller Monty Moles, big Monty Moles must be hit with two eggs to be defeated. Due to big Monty Moles appearing in the background, throwing eggs at them is the only method of defeating them in this game. When hit once, a big Monty Mole will have their fur color become red, but they are brought down upon a second hit. Big Monty Moles often appear when a red Time Cloud is hit, where a singular one alongside two smaller Monty Moles pop in and out of holes and must be defeated to make a Smiley Flower appear.

Trivia

  • Big Monty Moles are the only Monty Mole variant to have a notable member of them made before the existence of the species itself.
  • The big Monty Moles in Yoshi's Crafted World have a similar function to that of Morty Moles from Super Mario 3D Land, due to the both of them needing to be hit twice in order to be defeated.
