Fire Piranha Plants are a variant of Piranha Plant first appearing in Super Mario 3D Land. They are relatives of Venus Fire Traps but have a few differences. First, they're orange and black instead of the same coloration as a Piranha Plant. Their fireball aiming is also more precise than a Venus Fire Trap. They are also more aggressive than Venus Fire Traps however defeating/avoiding them is not particularly challenging.

History

Super Mario 3D Land

Fire Piranha Plants first appear in Super Mario 3D Land. They mainly appear in caverns and deserts, they wait for Mario (or Luigi) to pass by and they spit a fireball at them. Some leave behind a Fire Flower when they are defeated by Mario.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury

Fire Piranha Plants return in Super Mario 3D World and its Nintendo Switch remake, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. They retain the same behavior as in Super Mario 3D Land.

Super Mario Maker 2

Fire Piranha Plants appear in Super Mario Maker 2, in which they replace the Venus Fire Traps in the Super Mario 3D World style. Fire Piranha Plants behave similarly to a Venus Fire Trap but are more aggressive.

Trivia

  • Their colors of brown with orange spots slightly resemble Fiery Dino Piranha's colors.
  • The coloration change suggests a Fire Piranha Plant is a Piranha Plant that has donned a Fire Flower like Mario. This is further proven by the fact that they drop a Fire Flower upon defeat.
