Pikmin are a plant-animal hybrid species and the namesake of the Pikmin franchise. These beings inhabit the planet PNF-404, and spend time buried in the ground, with their leaves sticking out. In the series, they are plucked out the ground by the player to use in battles and such. Pikmin have sometimes appeared in the Mario games, but most notably appeared in the Super Smash Bros. series, aiding Captain Olimar since Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Origin
They first appear in Super Smash Bros. Melee, in which they and Captain Olimar (the main character) have their own trophy.
In Pikmin, Captain Olimar meets the Pikmin after crash-landing on the surface of a mysterious planet. The Pikmin help Olimar fight hostile creatures and recover the missing parts of his ship, the S.S. Dolphin, so that he can leave the planet and return home. In Pikmin 2, Olimar returns to the planet with his subordinate, Louie, to collect treasure and pay off the debt which their employing company, Hocotate Freight, accrued during the events of the first game. The Pikmin once again assist Olimar and Louie on their adventure.

Five of the colored varieties of Pikmin each represent one of the five recognized senses; red Pikmin have noses (smell), yellow have ears (hearing), blue have mouths (taste), purple have fine hairs on their heads representing touch and white Pikmin have superior sight to the others.
They cameo in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, appearing in flower beds. When the golf ball hits the flower beds they will jump.
