Monty Mole, Super Mario Party Jamboree

Monty Moles (sometimes referred to as Gophers or simply Moles) are fossorial[2] mole enemies who appear in many Mario games, with their first appearance being Super Mario World. Monty Moles are the most common species of mole mole found in the entire Mario series, as well as having several variants, notable members, and relatives too. They usually dart out of holes in the ground to either quickly pursue or throw rocks at the playable character. Despite Monty Moles being considered the main member of their species, their relative named Rocky Wrench (itself being described as a mole-like turtle at the time) debuted in Super Mario Bros. 3, which was two years prior to Monty Mole's debut and may have been what they were initially based on. However, starting in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Rocky Wrenches have since been redesigned to more heavily resemble Monty Moles (though Rocky Wrench's unused appearance in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and their appearance in Mario Kart DS also have various design similarities to Monty Moles).

History

Super Mario series

Super Mario World

Two separate pieces of artwork of Monty Mole in Super Mario World

Monty Moles make their debut Super Mario World, being encountered in both Yoshi's Island 2 and Cookie Mountain. Monty Moles pop out of random spots in the ground to surprise Mario or Luigi and will either chase after them persistently or just walk around and hop occasionally (though the latter behavior was not seen in future titles). Monty Moles can easily be defeated by any attack method. Super Mario World also introduced a larger variant of Monty Mole named Mega Mole, which Mario or Luigi can ride on to get across obstacles. Despite this, Mega Moles can still damage Mario or Luigi. In some earlier builds of the game, Monty Moles had slightly different digging sprites from those in the final game.

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

Main article: Ragumo

Although Monty Moles do not physically appear in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, a confirmed relative to them named Ragumo appears in the game. Ragumo being confirmed as a relative to the Monty Mole species was mainly found in multiple official Japanese sources.

Super Mario All-Stars / Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3

Mario plucking a Monty Mole out of the ground in the World-e level Ground Work from Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3

Although Monty Moles are not present in the original version of Super Mario Bros. 3 (though their relative Rocky Wrench made their debut in said game), in Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, the king of Iced Land is turned into a Monty Mole by Lemmy Koopa. In Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, Monty Moles also appeared as enemies in the World-e level Ground Work. In this level, Monty Moles look and act like how they did in Super Mario World. Additionally, some Monty Moles hide beneath grass patches and are released upon the player plucking them. Like in Super Mario World, Monty Moles can easily be defeated using any method of attack.

Super Mario 64 / Super Mario 64 DS

A Monty Mole in Super Mario 64
Yoshi encountering two Monty Moles in Tall, Tall Mountain in Super Mario 64 DS

Monty Moles appear in the Hazy Maze Cave and on Tall, Tall Mountain in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS. In Hazy Maze Cave, Monty Moles specifically reside in the toxic maze (though they remain outside the toxic cloud), and in Tall, Tall Mountain, Monty Moles reside at the cliff area near most of the Red Coins. Uniquely, Monty Moles now have a unique attack pattern in this game, attacking by throwing rocks at one of the characters before burrowing back down into another hole (which would later become a consistently used attack pattern seen in other games). If Mario, Yoshi, Luigi, or Wario can defeat a certain number of Monty Moles, a 1-Up Mushroom will appear for them to collect. Although Monty Moles retain their same behaviors in Super Mario 64 DS, they would be redesigned to what would become their current design used in the franchise. Additionally, Yoshi cannot eat Monty Moles in Super Mario 64 DS (unlike in most games).

Interestingly enough, the Nintendo Power guidebook states that the Monty Moles in the Hazy Maze Cave are a family and the ones in Tall, Tall Mountain are considered their friends.[3]

Super Mario Sunshine

Artwork of a Monty Mole for Super Mario Sunshine

A Monty Mole, also called Chorobe[4] or cannoneer,[5] appears as a boss in Super Mario Sunshine. He appears in Pinna Park and Noki Bay at the helm of large, red, dome-shaped cannons, which the Monty Mole uses to either fire Bullet Bills at Mario or Glorpedos down the cliffside of Noki Bay. When Mario approaches the Monty Mole, he stops firing and tosses Bob-ombs at him. They can be disabled using FLUDD, and tossing a Bob-omb at the Monty Mole three times defeats him. Both battles with the Monty Mole are almost exactly the same.

At Pinna Park, the Monty Mole is found in the episode The Beach Cannon's Secret at the far end of the beach past the Great Sunflower. After Mario defeats him, he is able to jump into the cannon and access a secret course to get the Shine Sprite. A Pianta repairman replaces the Monty Mole from Episode 3 onward. In Noki Bay, the Monty Mole reappears in the Uncork the Waterfall mission, corking up the waterfall and causing the water to be polluted. After defeating the Monty Mole again, the waterfall is uncorked, flinging both the cork and the Monty Mole far away, after which Mario can collect the Shine Sprite (though the water still remains polluted in later missions).

The manning of war machinery may be a throwback to Rocky Wrenches, who manned many of the machines in Super Mario Bros 3. Parts of Monty Mole's design in this game also resemble that of classic Rocky Wrenches, such as the long arms and color placement. This is also the first Mario game to feature a Monty Mole as a boss.

New Super Mario Bros.

The Whack-a-Monty minigame from New Super Mario Bros.
The Monty Tank boss from New Super Mario Bros.

Although Monty Moles are absent as regular enemies, the game does feature a Monty Mole operating a tank named Monty Tank, who appears as the boss of the World 6- in New Super Mario Bros. Monty Tank can fire Bullet Bills and out of his tank and throw Bob-ombs as his method of attack. Mario or Luigi can defeat Monty Tank by either stomping the Monty Mole's head three times when he comes out to throw a Bob-omb, or by hitting him with fireballs. When jumped on, the tank will spin around and shoot many Bullet Bills and gain another turret. Interestingly enough, the model for Monty Mole used in this game (which is only used for Monty Tank) is the same model used in Super Mario 64 DS, albeit with much lower quality textures.

Normal Monty Moles appear in the minigame "Whack-a-Monty," where the player has to tap as many Monty Moles as they can in a certain amount of time. The player will gain one point for each Monty Mole whacked and will lose three if they tap on Luigi. The bodies of the Monty Moles that the played has whacked will also pile up on the top screen (although if the player gets too many points, the Monty Moles on the top screen will stop piling up).

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Monty Moles only normally appear in World 6-4. Here, they retain their main attack method from Super Mario World. Once Mario and crew get near a Monty Mole's hiding spot, they will jump out of the wall and will try to charge into them. Like in most games, Monty Moles can easily be defeated by any attack method. Kamek can also turn platforms into Monty Moles during his fight with Mario in World 8-. The Monty Mole's trading card states that Monty Moles will "burrow back underground in the blink of an eye," though they do not do this in-game. From this game forward, Rocky Wrenches use a variation of the Monty Mole model with added goggles.

Super Mario 3D Land

A Monty Mole (left) and Morty Mole (right) from Super Mario 3D Land

Monty Moles reappear in Super Mario 3D Land, with the only level they appear in being 5-4, a cave level. This is their first appearance in a 3D game where they are found outside the ground and can run. Monty Moles can be seen patrolling a small area and will damage Mario or Luigi if he gets in their way. Unlike most games however, Monty Moles do not actively chase the player and will only hurt Mario or Luigi if they are in the way of their path. Monty Moles can be defeated with either a single stomp (having a unique squished animation never seen in other games) or a fireball. A new larger Monty Mole variant known as Morty Mole also appears, appearing in World 5-4 and 7-4, with them needing to be stomped twice to be defeated. A few of the cutscenes depicting Mario obtaining one of Peach's letters feature one or two Monty Moles in the background as Mario runs to quickly save her. Unlike the Monty Moles in-game, these ones are depicted partially underground, which could possibly be a reference to their appearance in Super Mario 64. A Monty Mole also makes a very brief background cameo in the photo seen from the World 7 letter.

New Super Mario Bros. U

Two Monty Moles in Rolling Yoshi Hills from New Super Luigi U

After an absence in New Super Mario Bros. 2, Monty Moles once again appear in New Super Mario Bros. U and it's Nintendo Switch remake, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. In this game, Monty Moles act the same as they did back in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Despite this, Monty Moles only appear in the levels Yoshi Hill and Magma-River Cruise, though Monty Moles also appear as one of the enemies that can be summoned during Kamek's boss battle in Slide Lift Tower. Notably, a singular Monty Mole is promonitly featured in the Challenge Mode level Mole to Goal, and its sequel, Mole to Goal Returns, where the goal is to transport the Monty Mole to the Goal Pole without them getting killed. If the Monty Mole gets defeated at any point in either of these two missions, the player loses and must try again. Uniquely, the Monty Mole has a unique victory animation when the player successfully does either of the two missions, making them the only enemy in the game to have a victory animation.

New Super Luigi U

Monty Moles retain their role from New Super Mario Bros. U in New Super Luigi U and appear in the levels Rolling Yoshi Hills, and Magmaw River Cruise. They also appear in Stonecrush Tower as a part of Kamek's boss battle and have the same functions in the fight as in New Super Mario Bros. U.

Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS

Super Mario Bros. game style
Super Mario Bros. 3 game style
Super Mario World game style
New Super Mario Bros. U game style

Monty Moles reappear in Super Mario Maker and Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS as enemies, where they function the same as previous games. In the Course Maker, they are made by shaking a Rocky Wrench. They can be placed on or inside the ground (the latter of which will make them climb up and pop out if the player gets close). They can be enlarged by a Super Mushroom or given wings (the former will make them big Monty Moles and the latter will make them winged Monty Moles). They can be blocked from coming out of the ground by placing an object like a P Switch on top of where they will emerge. They can be placed in Blocks, Pipes, Bill Blasters, and on tracks. If an enemy is placed on top of a Monty Mole underground, the enemy will remain stationary until the player triggers the Monty Mole underneath. Monty Moles are also prominent in the event level Shaun's Mossy Mole Mischief and at the end of the level there is also a Monty Mole "mech" in the shape of their Super Mario Bros. style sprite made out of blocks and cannons that must be defeated.

Super Mario Maker 2

Monty Moles reappear in Super Mario Maker 2 as enemies, sharing the same behavior as in Super Mario Maker. Monty Moles appear only in the orignal four styles and are absent from the Super Mario 3D World style (likely due to them being absent from that game). Unlike in Super Mario Maker, Monty Moles are now completely separate from Rocky Wrenches. The course creator Mischievous Mole could possibly be a Monty Mole, as one of his courses has Monty Moles in it. The Googoo Onesie Mii outfit also depicts the Super Mario World Monty Mole sprite on the bib.

Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros.

Mario jumping towards a Monty Mole in Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros.

Although Monty Moles never appeared in the original Super Mario Bros., they do make a small appearance in Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. Monty Moles only appear in the clock mode around the hour of either 7:00 AM or 7:00 PM, where they reuse their Super Mario World sprite. The Monty Moles behave somewhat differently compared to other Mario titles, as they repeatedly pop out of the ground and walk around before burrowing back into the ground, repeating the cycle indefinitely unless defeated. Mario can also be able to occasionally jump on the Monty Moles to defeat them just like in past titles.

NES Open Tournament Golf

The Monty Mole on the cover of NES Open Tournament Golf

While Monty Moles do not appear within the actual gameplay of NES Open Tournament Golf, what appears to be one is shown on the game cover. The Monty Mole has round sunglasses, three hairs, and a square tooth. The Monty Mole is also atypically small in comparison to Mario.

Mario Kart series

Super Mario Kart

Monty Moles (referred to as Gophers in the instruction booklet)[6] reappear in Super Mario Kart as hazards found in Donut Plains 2 and Donut Plains 3. If a racer drives into a Monty Mole, the Monty Mole will attach itself to the racer, which causes the racer to slow down and drop coins. The racer must hop repeatedly in order to knock the Monty Mole away. Uniquely, in Donut Plains 3, some Monty Moles can be seen jumping out of the lake.

Mario Kart 64

Monty Moles (referred to under the name Chubby in the instruction booklet,[7] though other sources generically refer to them as just Moles or Gophers) reappear in Mario Kart 64 as obstacles in Moo Moo Farm. They are designed with triangular sunglasses and tan snouts in this game (somewhat similar to the Monty Mole design seen in the Super Mario World artwork). The moles act like how they did in Super Mario Kart, where they hop in and out of holes in the ground. However, instead of the moles latching onto the racer, they will instead cause the racer who to spin out (alongside themselves). In the Japanese version of the game, the moles can be hit using the Boo item like a Starman. However, this does not apply in the other versions of Mario Kart 64, since using the boo item in other versions of the game makes the racer phase through the moles.

Both the North American and Australian instruction booklet appear to refer to Chubby in the singular form, as if they were a singular character.[7] However, the Moo Moo Farm graphic shows a few red X's representing "Watch out for Chubby!", as they are encountered in a few different parts of the course.

Mario Kart DS

In Mario Kart DS, Monty Moles return as obstacles in Peach Gardens, as well as the returning N64 Moo Moo Farm. This game features Monty Moles with their modern design, but their behaviors are the same as they were in Mario Kart 64. In Mission 3-6, Luigi is task to hit five Monty Moles with Green Shells in N64 Moo Moo Farm. In this game, Rocky Wrenches look somewhat similar to Monty Moles, though their designs are not as similar as in the later games that came after New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Mario Kart Wii

A Monty Mole in Mario Kart Wii

In Mario Kart Wii, Monty Moles appear as obstacles in Moo Moo Meadows, as well as returning in DS Peach Gardens. Monty Moles also appear as audience members in other courses as well. Monty Moles are now depicted much bigger than in previous games, as well as now being able to dig under the ground before jumping out. However, Monty Moles are still stationary obstacles in DS Peach Gardens like in previous games.

Monty Moles originally used their model from Super Mario 64 DS and New Super Mario Bros., as well as having a different jumping animation as a placeholder. This unused model and animation for Monty Mole was likely used as just placeholder before making the final model and animations.[8]

Mario Kart 7

Monty Moles only make a cameo in Mario Kart 7, where they are among the many species seen cheering in crowds in various courses, similar to what Monty Moles did in some courses from Mario Kart Wii. Additionally, Monty Mole's voice clips from Mario Kart Wii are reused for their relative, Rocky Wrench.

Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

A Monty Mole in Peach Gardens from the Booster Course Pass in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

In Mario Kart 8 and its Nintendo Switch remake, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Monty Moles return as obstacles in both SNES Donut Plains 3 and Wii Moo Moo Meadows. Monty Moles now dig around for some time before popping up like in Mario Kart Wii. However, the trails that the Monty Moles leave can now also be used to perform tricks. In SNES Donut Plains 3, the Monty Moles in the lake are now replaced by Cheep Cheeps. SNES Donut Plains 3 now also has a sign with a picture of a Monty Mole on it being placed by the Monty Mole area. In Animal Crossing from the Animal Crossing x Mario Kart 8 DLC Pack, Mr. Resetti replaces Monty Moles to fit with the theme of the course. In the third wave for the Booster Course Pass in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Monty Moles reappear in DS Peach Gardens. Unlike in the Mario Kart Wii version of Peach Gardens, the Monty Moles are not stationary and rather dig around to match the other tracks that Monty Moles appeared in Mario Kart 8. Monty Moles would also reappear as obstacles in Tour Amsterdam Drift, from the fourth wave of the Booster Course Pass.

Mario Kart Tour

Monty Mole driving by its course obstacle counterpart in SNES Donut Plains 2

Monty Mole would make his official playable debut in the Mario Kart series (and fifth overall playable appearance) in Mario Kart Tour since the Flower Tour, released on May 6, 2020. Monty Mole is classified as a tour-exclusive Super character (the first Super character with this distinction) and his special item is the Mushroom Cannon. Starting with the Wild West Tour, Monty Mole became a regular Super character while also gaining a self-named cup (though ironically a lot of the courses in said cup do not usually have any correlation to Monty Mole). Monty Moles also reappear as obstacles in GBA Sunset Wilds R/T, SNES Donut Plains 2, SNES Donut Plains 3, and Amsterdam Drift (barring the T variant), where they behave the same as in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, allowing racers to perform a Jump Boost off their trails and holes. Interestingly enough, the Monty Moles that appear as obstacles in this game are much bigger than the playable Monty Mole. Additionally, a Mii Racing Suit based on Monty Mole would be released during the third Mario vs. Luigi Tour.

Mario is Missing!

Monty Moles appear in the CD-ROM Deluxe version of Mario is Missing! They can be called on occasion and can be asked questions about the country Luigi is in. Upon answering all of the questions correctly, he gives money from the mayor as a token of appreciation and encourages Luigi to find Mario. This is one of the few times Monty Moles are fully voice-acted.

Mario Undōkai

Mario playing the Whac-a-Mole minigame in Mario Undōkai

Monty Moles make a few appearances in the Mario Undōkai arcade game, usually using their design from Super Mario World. Monty Mole's most prominent role is in the Whac-a-Mole minigame, where Mario has to use his hammer to hit the Monty Moles as they jump out of the pipes, with the goal being to hit as many Monty Moles as possible. This is the first game to feature Monty Moles in a Whac-a-Mole minigame.

Monty Moles also appear in the running minigame, where they appear as one of the enemies Mario needs to dodge while he collects coins. Like the other enemies, Monty Moles will be instantly defeated when coming into contact with Invincible Mario. A singular Monty Mole also has a minor role in the discus toss minigame from the sports course, where after a character's discus has landed upon being thrown, a Monty Mole appears on-screen, holding a sign, and flips it over, with the sign displaying the number of meters in which it was thrown. Incidentally, Monty Moles would not return as Discus referees in the Mario & Sonic series, let alone as referees for any of the Olympic events.

One of the Mario Undōkai trading cards depicts Mario running away from two Monty Moles.

Hotel Mario

In Hotel Mario, Monty Moles appear mostly in Larry's Chillton Hotel, though they also appear in Bowser's Seizures Palace Hotel. They dig out of the thin floors and then start sliding towards Mario. They will hit the wall, get dizzy for a moment, and then proceed with their antics again.

Game & Watch Gallery series

The modern version of Manhole as seen in Game & Watch Gallery
The modern version of Vermin as seen in Game & Watch Gallery 2

Game & Watch Gallery

Monty Moles (referred to as Chubbies in the cast credits) appear in Game & Watch Gallery, in which they appear in the Modern version of Manhole. They usually pop up on occasion to throw a heart at Yoshi. Monty Mole being named Chubby in this game could possibly be a reference to the American and Australian Mario Kart 64 instruction booklet referring to a Monty Mole as Chubby.

Game & Watch Gallery 2

Monty Moles reappear in Game & Watch Gallery 2, in which they appear in the Modern version of Vermin. They appear when the player earns 200, 500, and 700 points. When the Monty Moles appear, they throw a heart which Yoshi can smash to restore a third of the damage done to the Yoshi Eggs. Monty Mole's behavior is similar to what they did in the previous game.

Mario Golf series

Mario Golf

In Mario Golf for the Nintendo 64, if the player successfully putts the ball into the hole from a long distance and scores under par, a Monty Mole may pop out of the hole (using their Super Mario 64 design in this game). The name "Monty Mole" may also appear on the scoreboard.

Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour

In Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Monty Mole's name can sometimes be seen on the tournament board. Despite this, Monty Moles themselves do not physically appear in this game.

Mario Golf: Advance Tour

A Monty Mole's appearance in Mario Golf: Advance Tour

In Mario Golf: Advance Tour, a Monty Mole appears in Links Club Practice Center. The player must shoot three shots at the Monty Mole in order to defeat them. Each time the Monty Mole gets hit, they will move to another spot in the map. If the player misses hitting the Monty Mole even once, the Monty Mole will return back to the place it came from and the player must hit them three times again. Once the Monty Mole is defeated after getting hit three times, they will drop a Super Drink.

Mario Golf: World Tour

Monty Moles reappear once again in Mario Golf: World Tour, with most of the Monty Moles appearing in the Castle Club mode as NPC characters. Two Monty Moles also appear in Hole 7 of Wiggler Park, with the Monty Moles digging underground if they get hit by the ball. Due to the player being much smaller in Wiggler Park, the Monty Moles appear much bigger than they actually are. Monty Mole's name can also appear on the tournament scoreboard.

Mario Golf: Super Rush

“Piece of advice. If you're always goin' for full power, your accuracy might drop.”
Monty Mole, Mario Golf: Super Rush

Monty Moles appear in Mario Golf: Super Rush where they once again appear as NPCs. Most of the Monty Moles in this game appear in Bonny Greens, although a singular Monty Mole also appears in Ridgerock Lake. Monty Mole's name also appears on the Bonny Greens Open scoreboard.

Paper Mario series

Paper Mario

Parakarry doing a Sky Dive into a Monty Mole in Paper Mario

During the events of Paper Mario, Monty Moles appear at Mt. Rugged, where they either pop halfway out of the ground and throw rocks at Mario, or pop all the way out and chase him. In battle, they are always found halfway underground and attack Mario by throwing rocks at him. In one of the walls of the mountain, there is a Monty Mole-shaped hole, through which an endless stream of moles can pop out. Stronger green Monty Moles can also be found in Flower Fields. They are also known as "Monty Moles"; however, the Japanese version of the game gave them a different name from the regular Monty Moles, suggesting that they are a unique variant.

Paper Mario: The Origami King

Several Monty Moles in Breezy Tunnel from Paper Mario: The Origami King
“You never know what you're gonna find when you start diggin'. That's what I love about it!”
Monty Mole, Paper Mario: The Origami King

Monty Moles reappear in Paper Mario: The Origami King where, unlike the first Paper Mario, Monty Moles act as friendly NPCs rather than enemies. An unnamed Monty Mole auctioneer appears in Overlook Mountain, where he sells one of the shell stones. Multiple Monty Moles appear as NPCs in Breezy Tunnel, giving the player dialogue (and sometimes an item). According to the Monty Moles, Breezy Tunnel is the workplace for them to find valuables to sell to Bowser. The Monty Moles also confuse Olivia for a female bee. A Monty Mole also confirms that they do not support bee bullying, as one scolded Mario for making the Olivia (who they through was a bee girl) cry (though they later forgave him after he made her happy). Breezy Tunnel also has a shop with a Fun, Funky, and Functional Monty Mole and a regular Monty Mole. A Toad mechanic as well as his two Monty Mole assistants help give repairs to the Super Marino. In the alternate textures for Paper Mistake Buzzy Beetle, it is shown that multiple Monty Moles were among the many victims that had their faces severed and put on the boss. Finally, a Monty Mole can be seen in the final cutscene, being seen working at a Soccer ball shop.

Monty Moles were also originally planned to have origami variants, but these variants were scrapped for unknown reasons.

Mario Party series

Mario Party 3

A Monty Mole in Mario Party 3

Several Monty Moles appear in Woody Woods in Mario Party 3. They switch the direction players can move on certain pathways every turn. These Monty Moles wear sunglasses and can be found in army hut-like structures with a flag depicting their face. For 5 coins, the Monty Mole will switch the signs from one direction to another. They can also appear out of any of three holes scattered across the board, depending on where it is summoned via speaking to it in its hut or landing on a Happening Space. Monty Moles also appear in Storm Chasers as obstacles the player must avoid.

Mario Party 5

In Mario Party 5, Monty Moles appear in the minigame Flatiator. They appear out of the ground to obstruct the team players while avoiding the single player. The one player on the ball can simply roll over them, causing them to go back underground. A Monty Mole also appears in Pirate Dream hosting a board event where the player can mine for coins.

Mario Party 6

The daytime version of Mole-it! from Mario Party 6

In Mario Party 6, Monty Moles are in the minigame Mole-it!, where the players earn points by hitting them when they pop out of the pipes. During the day, the pipes are on the ceiling, and at night, they are on the ground. Hitting a normal Monty Mole earns a team one point, and a Golden Monty Mole gives the team three. They also appear in the Star Sprint level Meadow Road as obstacles the player can avoid but can also be defeated by dashing into them. Monty Moles also appear in the Miracle Book in the "Poppin' Out of the Pipe" and "Bountiful Harvest" sections, despite never appearing in Garden Grab.

Mario Party Advance

The Monty Mole in Mario Party Advance
Main article: Monty Mole (Mario Party Advance)

A Monty Mole appears as a character in the Town Area of Shroom City in Mario Party Advance.

Mario Party 7

In Mario Party 7, a Monty Mole appears on the board Pyramid Park. They appear when the player lands on the Green Space on the far right of the board, next to three pots. He offers to play a small minigame, where the player must hit the cobras but not the Monty Mole. If the player hits the Monty Mole, the minigame will automatically end. In the minigame Sphere Factor, three or four Monty Moles pop out of the ground towards the end (before the bridge) and try to prevent the player from rolling the huge ball to the finish line. These Monty Moles also appear in the ending for the minigame as well. Three Monty Moles also appear in the minigame Monty's Revenge, where they are the ones whacking the players with hammers. The name of the minigame also suggests that this is the Monty Mole's revenge on being whacked with hammers.

This is the first Mario Party game where Monty Moles use their modern design, although an unused model suggests that they were going to originally use the design from the previous games. However, the model lacks any textures and was likely replaced with the modern design rather early in development.[9]

Mario Party 8

The minigame Crops 'n' Robbers from Mario Party 8

Monty Moles make another Mario Party appearance in Mario Party 8. Some appear in the minigame Crops 'n' Robbers where one player has to whack Monty Moles that are in the holes, so the players can gain a way for the other player has to collect the carrots to win the game. It is also confirmed that the Monty Moles in this minigame created up a shop in the garden during the harvest season.[10] A Monty Mole also appears in the bonus minigame Moped Mayhem as one of the characters competing in the race. Monty Moles can also occasionally be seen in the lobby. Monty Moles also appear in the Sugar Rush Surprise figure in the Carnival Wagon.

Mario Party DS

A Monty Mole running an Item Shop in Mario Party DS

Monty Moles appear again in Mario Party DS as owners of the Item Shops. Once players enter the Warp Pipe, they can buy items from it. A Monty Mole also appears in the minigame Mole Thrill. In this minigame, players have to dig with their partner through the dirt, while staying ahead of the Monty Mole (though it is impossible for the Monty Mole to reach the players. Monty Mole also has a trophy and rival badge that can be unlocked.

Mario Party 9

In Mario Party 9, Monty Moles appear in the minigame Plunder Ground. They hold and shuffle the treasure chests the players try to earn points from. Monty Moles also appear out of the holes in the minigame Hole Hogs, where they distract the main player from trying to whack the other players. Monty Moles also appear in Magma Mine as background characters, usually hiding when the lava begins to rise. In addition, a famous member of the Monty Mole species named Hello Mole has a constellation named after him.

Mario Party: Island Tour

Monty Moles reappear in Mario Party: Island Tour for the Nintendo 3DS. Monty Moles appear as options to choose from in the minigames Match Faker and Tap Dash. Monty Moles also cameo in the background of Drive for Show and Bumper Thumper. A Monty Mole constellation (similar to Hello Mole from Mario Party 9) can also be seen in the minigame Starring Artist. A Monty Mole makes a board appearance in Perilous Palace Path, where they appear near a Goomba Tower under the gray circle. If the Goomba Tower points to the right, the player standing on the gray circle will be thrown into the Bowser Zone by the Monty Mole.

Mario Party 10

Main article: Mega Monty Mole

Although normal Monty Moles do not appear in Mario Party 10, an enlarged Monty Mole known as Mega Monty Mole appears as the mid-boss of Airship Central. He appears in the minigame Mega Monty Mole's Maze Mischief.

Mario Party: Star Rush

The minigame Rolls for Moles from Mario Party: Star Rush

Mega Monty Mole retains his role as a boss in Mario Party: Star Rush appearing in the minigame Mega Monty Mole's in the Hole. Normal Monty Moles appear in the minigame Rolls for Moles, in which the player must hit as many Monty Moles as they can.

Mario Party: The Top 100

Monty Moles appear in Mario Party: The Top 100, reprising their roles in the minigames Storm Chasers (now using their modern design), Monty's Revenge, and Sphere Factor, acting linearly identically to how they did in the original minigames. In Mini-Game Island, a cardboard Monty Mole holding a hammer can be seen by Monty's Revenge.

Super Mario Party

Monty Mole after clearing a challenge in Challenge Road from Super Mario Party
“This could be fun. Sure, I'm in!”
Monty Mole, Super Mario Party

Monty Mole appears as a playable character in Super Mario Party for the first time in the Mario Party series, as well as being their fourth playable appearance overall. As shown in the introductory cutscene, Bowser calls upon Monty Mole, Bowser Jr., Goomba, Boo, Shy Guy, Koopa Troopa, Dry Bones, Hammer Bro, and Pom Pom to participate in the party to be crowned "Super Star." Monty Mole's Dice Block has a +1 coin side instead of a 1; otherwise, it is functionally identical to the normal Dice Block. Fake Monty Moles also appear in the minigame Rhythm and Bruise, where the player's objective is to whack them with hammers to the beat of the music. If the player uses Monty Mole for this minigame, he will start sweating and display a nervous expression. Monty Moles can also cameo in Absent Minded as one of the characters that can be chosen, though they only appear if nobody is playing as Monty Mole. Like most other characters, a Monty Mole also appears as one of the puzzles in Puzzle Hustle, being depicted as their Super Mario World sprite. Like all the other playable characters, Monty Mole has both a regular and shiny sticker. Other non-playable Monty Moles can also occasionally be seen walking or running around in the background of Party Plaza, with these Monty Moles being the only non-playable ones that appear in Super Mario Party.

Mario Party Superstars

Monty Moles appear in Mario Party Superstars as part of Woody Woods, retaining their role from Mario Party 3, although the Monty Mole huts have been replaced with burrows that serve the same function. Additionally, a Monty Mole can be one of the characters in Woody Woods who can decide which player they think would win during the last five turns. Monty Moles also reprise their roles in the Storm Chasers and Monty's Revenge, just like in Mario Party: The Top 100. A Monty Mole sticker that has a caption saying "Nice!" can be used as a taunt alongside other stickers found in the game. The encyclopedia entry for Monty Mole states that they appeared in every Mario Party after Mario Party 3, including Mario Party 4 (despite never appearing in that game). Mario Party 10 is also listed in the appearances section, despite that game only featuring a boss named Mega Monty Mole, with no regular Monty Moles appearing in the game.

Super Mario Party Jamboree

“Hey there. You want to experience all the thrills of a mole's life?”
Monty Mole, Super Mario Party Jamboree

Monty Mole reappears as a playable character in Super Mario Party Jamboree, making this both their second playable appearance in a Mario Party title, as well as their sixth playable appearance overall. In this game, Monty Mole's playable role is virtually identical to their appearance in Super Mario Party.

In addition to being a playable character, Monty Moles also make various non-playable roles throughout the game as well. In the Bowser Kaboom Squad minigame Juiceworks, a Monty Mole will occasionally pop out of the ground from time to time to block the three players attempting to bring apples to the conveyor belt. If the player runs into the Monty Mole, they will get stunned for a few seconds and drop the apple that they were carrying. Mechanical Monty Moles similar to the plastic ones seen in the Super Mario Party minigame Rhythm and Bruise can be found within the Koopathlon minigame Noggin Knock. In this minigame, the player must whack the mechanical Monty Moles with a hammer in order to gain coins from each Monty Mole whacked (with regular ones giving 1 coin, the golden ones giving 5 coins, and the large golden one giving 20 coins, with the latter two types of Monty Moles needing to be whacked multiple times in order to get rewarded). In addition, pictures of Monty Moles reusing their Mario Super Sluggers artwork can also sometimes be seen in the minigame Big-Top Quiz.

Outside of minigames, a singular Monty Mole also makes a small background appearance on the board Mega Wiggler's Tree Party, where it can be seen hanging out with a Pink Shy Guy sitting on a log (though this Monty Mole cannot be interacted with). A Monty Mole can sometimes be seen on the Mario Party island when riding the Hot-Air Balloon, which the player can zoom in and take a picture of to unlock the "Popping Up to Say Hello" photo in the Album. Monty Moles also make a few appearances as NPCs in the Party-Planner Trek campaign during some tasks. In the "In Time of Need" task found in Mega Wiggler's Tree Party, a Monty Mole will offer the player a Mini Star they found while digging, giving said Mini Star if the player accepts their offer. Additionally, if the player is not already playing as Monty Mole at the moment, the Monty Mole will also help out in the Mega Stingby fight after completing their task. In "The Whole Monty Mole Experience" task found in Roll 'em Raceway, a Monty Mole will offer the player to play the minigame Lost and Pound in order to experience the thrills of a mole's life. If the player wins the minigame, they will be rewarded with two Mini Stars and be congratulated.

Mario Family

Mario Pinball Land

A 1-up Mole found in the Grassy Greens Stage from Mario Pinball Land

Monty Moles (referred to as 1-up Moles by Nintendo Power),[11] appear as special enemies in Mario Pinball Land. A singular 1-up Mole can be found in every level in the game (except the Fun Fair), where they peek out from one of their holes and remain as stationary obstacles. If Mario hits a 1-up Mole, he gains 500 points and the 1-up Mole is stunned briefly before moving to another hole. However, the 1-up Mole will eventually go back to their previous hole if they are not hit after a while. If Mario successfully hits the 1-up Mole enough times, they will go to the background and then proceed to drop a 1-Up Mushroom due to digging underneath it (though the 1-up Mole in the Frosty Frontier Stage drops an Invincibility Star instead). After this, the 1-up Mole cannot be hit further by Mario. Due to their behavior, the only way a 1-up Mole can be defeated is with a Star. Each level that a 1-up Mole appears in also has a unique costume for them specific to that level. The Grassy Greens Stage has a normal 1-up Mole; the Frosty Frontier Stage has a parka wearing 1-up Mole; the Shifting Sands Stage has a fez wearing 1-up Mole; and the Fiery Stage has a Viking helmet wearing 1-up Mole.

Mario Tennis series

Mario Power Tennis

In the opening for Mario Power Tennis, a Monty Mole can be seen by a Toad, as the both of them notice Wario and Waluigi being chased by the police. Later in the opening, several more Monty Moles (along with other species) can be seen watching the tournament, as Wario, Waluigi and Bowser attempt to destroy the stadium. In the main game, Monty Moles exclusively appear in the Chain-Chomp Challenge minigame, where they man cannons identical to the ones from Super Mario Sunshine (with it likely also being a reference to their role in that game). However, the Monty Moles themselves use the revamped Super Mario World design seen in most previous GameCube games, rather than their design from Super Mario Sunshine. The role that the Monty Moles have in the Chain-Chomp Challenge is to shoot tennis balls and Bob-ombs from their cannons at the players to hit back at the Chain Chomps.

Mario Tennis Aces

In Mario Tennis Aces, Monty Moles make a minor appearance in the background of Bask Ruins, where they can be seen jumping in and out of their holes.

Mario Baseball series

Mario Superstar Baseball

Monty Mole getting ready to swing in Mario Superstar Baseball.

Monty Mole makes an appearance in Mario Superstar Baseball as a playable character for the first time in the franchise. In Challenge mode, Monty Mole is a member of Mario's team (which is the Mario Sunshines by default). For the different modes in general, Monty Mole is one of the four characters required for the Mario Sunshines to be the name of Mario's team, the other three being Luigi, at least one Pianta, and at least one Noki. To unlock Monty Mole, the player has to clear Challenge mode with Mario's team on Mushroom difficulty.

Monty Mole has the Ball Dash ability, which allows them to run extremely fast while in possession of the baseball. Monty Mole is a speedy character with fast running, weak batting and pitching and average fielding. Monty Mole has good chemistry with Shy Guy, Goomba, and Paragoomba, and doesn't have any bad chemistry with any character. Interestingly, Monty Mole's description in this game reveals that the holes they jump out of are actually their dens.

Aside from the playable Monty Mole, various Monty Moles are also among the species sitting in the crowd in Mario Stadium (mainly in the opening cinematic). The Monty Moles in the crowd reuse the model for Monty Mole from prior GameCube titles, unlike the playable Monty Mole.

Monty Moles and Magikoopas were originally going to use baseball gloves at one point during development, as there are unused textures for baseball gloves for Monty Mole and Magikoopa.[12] However, in the final game, neither Monty Mole or Magikoopa use baseball gloves in order to catch the ball.

Mario Super Sluggers

“Great granite gumdrops! I was in the middle of a spectacular nap! Why'd you have to wake me?”
Monty Mole, Mario Super Sluggers
A Monty Mole getting ready to swing the bat in Mario Super Sluggers

In Mario Super Sluggers, Monty Mole maintains their position as a member of Mario's team. While Monty Mole's best stat continues to be speed, their other stats are slightly below average. Monty Mole's Ball Dash ability was replaced with the Burrow ability, where Monty Mole can dig underneath the base person without knocking them over and being able to get to it as well. Monty Moles share the same chemistry as they did in Mario Superstar Baseball, but brown Miis now also have good chemistry with Monty Mole. In the story mode of the game, Monty Mole can be found buried in the sand. If any of the team captains wakes them up, the Monty Mole will ask why they woke them up, and then claim that the team captain is no match for Bowser Jr. and his minions. The Monty Mole then challenges the team captain to a baseball match. Once the player wins, the Monty Mole will happily join the team and will be unlocked as a character to use. Monty Moles also appear in many of the cutscenes either being in the crowd or cheering Mario. Unlike the previous game and Mario Strikers Charged, Monty Mole's use their modern design in the cutscenes rather than their models from early GameCube games. Monty Mole's artwork from this game would also be reused in various other later games and other pieces of media.

Mario & Luigi series

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

The Monty Mart in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

Monty Moles make their Mario & Luigi debut in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (though a species of Monty Mole named Presenter appeared in the previous game). One Monty Mole is encountered in the Gritzy Desert, and will prevent the four Mario Bros. of past and present from progressing unless they can complete his challenge. The challenge consists of the Mario and Luigi quickly getting to the end and hitting the block before time runs out. Two more Monty Moles are seen in the beginning of Gritzy Caves and they both run an Item Shop called the Monty Mart. Additionally, two more Monty Moles appear in Gritzy Caves run two more challenges that must be completed as well. The first challenge being a matching challenge where the player has to squirt the correct target that is shown, while the second challenge is another speed challenge similar to the one in Gritzy Desert. When talking to the Monty Mole after beating the speed challenge, they have a hard time remembering what just happened, explaining that they have bad memory due to getting older.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story / Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey

The Monty Bros. in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
Main article: Monty Bros.

A group of five Monty Mole brothers, called the Monty Bros., appear in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and its remake, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, where they utilize a giant drilling machine to fulfill Bowser's orders and dig a tunnel below Toad Town to finish Project K. They do not make much progress however, due to the bedrock on the other side. Bowser then has to help finish the Monty Bros. duties.

The Monty Bros. later reappear in the Treasure Chamber in Bowser's Castle, where they tell Bowser that Fawful bribed them to be his minions and making Project K into a railroad for Fawful to have easy transportation around the Mushroom Kingdom.[13] The Monty Bros. attack Bowser in a giant train called the Fawful Express, in which Bowser must defeat them in his giant form. If Bowser fails to do so, the Monty Bros. will escape using a rickety old bridge, with Bowser falling in the gorge when attempting to walk on it. If Bowser succeeds, the falling chunks of the debris from the train will crush the Monty Bros. which presumably kills them. However, the Monty Bros. escape the Fawful Express in the remake, alongside other unseen Monty Moles.

Main article: Mawful Mole

A Fawful-themed variant of Monty Mole called Mawful Mole can also be found as enemies in Blubble Lake and as support enemies for the Tower of Yikk fight. Mawful Moles also have a stronger metal variant called Metal Mawful Mole, which can be found as enemies in Peach's Castle Garden.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team

Monty Moles make a minor enemy appearance in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. Here, they act as support enemies for exclusively for the Bowser Jr. battle at the end of the Battle Ring's Battle Medley. The Monty Moles burrow above the ground and begin making repairs to the Junior Clown Car after it explodes. If the Monty Moles get hit by a Taunt Ball, they take longer to repair his Clown Car. After finishing their repairs, the Monty Moles will burrow back in the ground.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam

Monty Moles reappear in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam once again as an enemy. They battle in holes that they dug in the ground, while also having a similar attack pattern as the Mawful Mole enemies in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. Unlike Mawful Moles, they can sometimes throw Golden Eggs instead of rocks. If the Golden Eggs are countered, they will give the Mario Bros. a few coins. Monty Moles are encountered normally in Sunbeam Plains and later the haunted area of Gloomy Woods, with the ones in the latter area being slightly stronger. Monty Moles also additionally appear in a few missions, such as enemies the Mario Bros. need to avoid to avoid in Fly Guy Flyby, as well as in a few questions of some of the quiz missions like Toad Trivia and Toad Brain. Monty Moles can also appear during one of the attacks from the Wiggler boss fight, in which Paper Mario has to hit several Monty Moles and Paper Spear Guys with his hammer that are blocking his way when he is being chased by Wiggler.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions

Main article: Presenter

Although Monty Moles were absent from the original Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, a friendly variant of Monty Mole named Presenter appeared as the only member of the species from the original game.

However, in the Nintendo 3DS remake, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, bowtie wearing Monty Moles would replace the Presenters from the original Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, as confirmed by Play Nintendo.[14] The Monty Moles in the remake have the same behaviors and dialogue as the Presenters from the original Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, where they are found in hidden areas and give items to Mario and Luigi. Like the Presenters from the original game, the Monty Moles do not give any extra items after being talked to again and instead call Mario and Luigi greedy for trying to get more items from them. There are 11 Monty Moles that can be found throughout Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, where they can be found in the exact same locations as the Presenters from the original Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. However, some of the items given by the Monty Moles in the remake are different to the items given by the Presenters in the original game. An additional twelfth Monty Mole exclusive to this remake can also be found within Beanbean Fields.

The 12 Monty Moles in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions can be found in the following locations:

Mario Strikers Charged

Monty Mole in Mario Strikers Charged

Monty Moles make their second playable appearance are a sidekick in Mario Strikers Charged. Monty Moles are Power Players, which means they are good at shooting and tackling, but cannot pass very well. Monty Mole's Skillshot is Dirt Drill, where they go underground with the ball and dig towards the goal, before then popping up near the goalie and shoving them aside to kick the ball into the goal. However, if the move is too close, Kritter will shove his hand into the ground and pull Monty Mole out, thereby blocking the shot. If the move is too far away, Kritter will simply catch the ball. In this game, Monty Moles have headlights, something that is never seen in any other game they appear in. Monty Mole's prominent tooth also atypically appears as a pair of teeth (which also happened in other games like the Mario Baseball titles). Monty Moles are also shown to have black dot eyes when their shocked (though their shocked expression eyes would be redesigned in future games). Monty Moles also appear in the crowds in the opening, using their design from early GameCube games (making it the last appearance of said design).

Mario Sports Mix

In Mario Sports Mix, a single Monty Mole can be seen as a spectator, cheering on the players when they play at Western Junction.

Dr. Mario World

A Monty Mole from Dr. Mario World

Monty Moles appear in Dr. Mario World as assistants. Their Stage Mode skill grants a chance five coins are rewarded upon clearing a stage regardless of whether the stage is cleared or uncleared, in which the chance of earning them is greater at higher levels. This effect does not activate upon clearing special stages or the Daily Booster. Their versus mode effect is to grant a chance that the attack meter will fill extra if a virus is eliminated. Contrary to the game's description which indicated that it can occur repeatedly, it only activates at the start of the match and the effect will last throughout the match if it does, and has a higher chance to do so at higher levels. When this effect activates, any elimination made either through a capsule match, elimination through skill, or elimination through other objects like shells will fill the attack meter by an extra point for each elimination made. Contrary to the game's description, viruses are not required to be eliminated to gain extra attack points. This effect stacks with Sledge Bro's effect, meaning that if both activate, two points will be filled in the attack meter for every elimination made.

Monty Moles also appear in the background of World 6 when the area is cleared.

Unused appearances

Dr. Mario 64

Monty Moles may have been planned to be playable in Dr. Mario 64 since their name can be seen in the game files. However, they are not seen in the final game at all or have any known graphics.[15]

Paper Mario series

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Concept art of The Thousand-Year Door characters, featuring a mole-based iteration of the Pianta Syndicate

Monty Moles were originally intended to appear as Rogueport criminals in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, being led by a Mega Mole. The design of both is based on their Super Mario World artwork, with a black suit and fedora; as such, they have a pointy brown nose and pointed sunglasses, unlike in the first Paper Mario which used their sunglasses design. They are replaced with Don Pianta's Pianta Syndicate in the final game.

Super Paper Mario
Unused sprite of a Monty Mole in Super Paper Mario

Monty Moles were going to appear in Super Paper Mario, but were taken out for unknown reasons. Similar to their behavior in the overworld of the first Paper Mario, they would have attacked Mario by popping out of holes in the wall (like in Super Mario World) and throwing rocks (like in Super Mario 64). The unused sprites for Monty Mole in this game use a higher-resolution version of their Paper Mario design (though with some different colors like their nose being pink). Monty Mole's animations were also fully complete before being removed.[16] Despite Monty Moles themselves being unused, a Sammer Guy named Monty Who Waits is named after them.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star
Paper Mario: Sticker Star prerelease screenshot featuring the King Choropū boss.

Monty Moles were going to appear as enemies in Paper Mario: Sticker Star but were cut from the game.[17] Additionally, a crowned purple Monty Mole boss named King Choropū (キングチョロプー)[18] was also intended to appear, as shown in a screenshot from the E3 2010 beta.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

As shown in a piece of concept art, Monty Moles were at one point going to be one of the members of the Koopa Troop to be featured in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.[19] However, Monty Moles do not appear in the final movie for unknown reasons.

Miscellaneous

A prerelease screenshot of Monty Mole in Wii Fit Plus

A Monty Mole can be seen on the cover of the pitch for the cancelled Nintendo Comic created by Fleetway Editions. However, due to the comic being cancelled, it is unknown what role Monty Mole would have had in the actual comic.

In early builds of Wii Fit Plus, Monty Mole's model from Mario Kart Wii was used as a placeholder for the moles in that game before eventually being removed.[20]

Yoshi appearances

Yoshi's Safari

Yoshi encountering two Monty Moles in Pipe Island from Yoshi's Safari

In Yoshi's Safari, Monty Moles appear as enemies in the levels Pipe Island and Cornice Cave. Monty Moles attack by popping out of pipes and running towards the player. However, they can easily be defeated by being shot with the Super Scope.

Yoshi Touch & Go

In Yoshi Touch & Go, Monty Moles appear as somewhat uncommon enemies, attacking Yoshi in a manner similar to their attack pattern from Super Mario World; leaping from the ground or by charging at Yoshi. Here, Monty Moles can be defeated by either jumping on them, throwing an egg at them or by encasing them in a circle with the Nintendo DS's stylus.

Yoshi's Woolly World / Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World

A Monty Mole in Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World

Monty Moles appear as an enemy in Yoshi's Woolly World and its Nintendo 3DS remake, Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World, where they can be found in the levels Big Montgomery's Fort, Perils of the Perplexing Pyramid, Yoshi and Cookies, Big Montgomery's Bubble Fort, Woollet Bill's Last Ride, and Big Montgomery's Ice Fort. Monty Moles either burrow around underground (usually under carpets) or they can pop out of the wall and chase Yoshi like in Super Mario World. Yoshi can defeat a Monty Mole either with a yarn ball, stomping on them, or eating them. If eaten, Monty Moles will turn into orange yarn balls. There is also a boss called Big Montgomery, which is a bigger Monty Mole who was enlarged by Kamek that appears as the mid-boss of Worlds 1, 3, and 5. Monty Moles also appear as support enemies for Big Montgomery's second and third battles. Monty Mole Patches are also found and are sentient drawings of Monty Moles that, when unraveled, will start chasing Yoshi like a normal Monty Mole. In the Scrapbook Theater, a normal Monty Mole pops out of a scarf roll and runs around the stage.

Yoshi's Crafted World

An Orange Yoshi fluttering above sone Monty Moles in Spring Sprung Trail in Yoshi's Crafted World

Monty Moles reappear in Yoshi's Crafted World as enemies in the levels Spring Sprung Trail, Monty-Mole-B-Gone, Haunted Maker Mansion, Jumping for Victory, and The Countdown Begins, usually walking or digging around the foreground or background in the levels they appear in. Yoshi can defeat the Monty Moles the same way he can in other games. Monty Moles play a notable role in the level Monty-Mole-B-Gone, where Yoshi has to defeat as many Monty Moles as he can in order to receive all of the Smiley Flowers. Their larger counterparts also make their debut in the Yoshi series. In some levels that Monty Moles appear in, Yoshi can hit a red Time Cloud to begin a timed mini challenge where Yoshi has to defeat all the Monty Moles (and a big Monty Mole) that appear in the background in order to receive a Smiley Flower. In the world map for Origami Gardens, a giant spring-like Monty Mole can be seen moving up and down above where the level Monty-Mole-B-Gone is. Some cardboard Monty Moles also make a cameo as circus spectator crafts in the level Hoop-Jump Hop along with cardboard Shy Guys.

Crossover appearances

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games

Monty Moles appear in the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games as obstacles in Dream Equestrian. Monty Moles pop in and out of their holes (like in Mario Kart Wii, as well as reusing sound clips from that game). If the wagon accidentally hits one of the holes, a Yoshi egg drops.

Nintendo Badge Arcade

Monty Moles appear in Nintendo Badge Arcade as part of the Super Mario Maker arcade using their Super Mario World style sprites, as well as in the Super Mario Bros. arcade using their Super Mario Bros. style sprites from Super Mario Maker.

Tetris 99

A Monty Mole makes a small background cameo in Tetris 99 on the 27th Maximus Cup.

Appearances in other media

Manga and comics

Super Mario Kodansha manga

Two Monty Moles seen in the first Super Mario World volume

Monty Moles make various appearances in the Super Mario Kodansha manga, being usually depicted as enemies that Mario and his friends usually overcome and defeat. The Monty Moles use their original sunglasses design for nearly all of their appearances in the manga up until the Super Mario 64 arc, where they used their design from said game instead.

They first appear in the first Super Mario World volume, in which a Monty Mole is among Bowser and his minions when he is taking over Dinosaur Land. Later on, two Monty Moles can be seen ambushing Mario and his friends, but they quickly get eaten by Yoshi. Later on, a different Monty Mole, alongside a Koopa Troopa, Rex, and Koopa Paratroopa attempt to attack Mario and his friends, but all the enemies get swiftly eaten by Yoshi.

The Monty Moles seen in the sixth Super Mario World volume

A singular Monty Mole makes a very small cameo in the second Super Mario World volume, being seen on an island with other enemies seeing Caped Mario fly off to tell readers about the previous volume.

In the fifth Super Mario World volume, a Monty Mole can be seen in the first chapter alongside several of Bowser's other minions listening to what he says. Later on, several Monty Moles jump out of the walls to attempt to grab a Bob-omb before being burned by Fire Mario. In a later chapter themed after a festival, a Triceratops can be seen playing a whack-a-mole type game featuring Monty Moles.

In the sixth Super Mario World volume, a star with a Monty Mole face can be seen on the cover of the volume. Later in the actual story, several Monty Moles wearing mining gear can be seen after the Golden Mushroom in the museum is stolen. Mario interrogates them before paying the museum toll for him and Yoshi continuing to find the culprit. It is soon revealed that the Monty Moles are minions of a Mega Mole who actually stole the Golden Mushroom. The Monty Moles and the Mega Mole later return in a chariot shaped like Bowser that drills through the ground to attack everyone in the interrogation cell. The Monty Moles throw several Bob-ombs at the group, until one explodes on them and destroys the chariot. The moles attempt to escape in a Wiggler-shaped cargo to make a quick getaway, but the vehicle is mostly eaten by Yoshi, causing the Monty Moles and Mega Mole to crash. While the Monty Moles do get defeated, the Mega Mole still attempts to defeat Mario, but they ultimately fail and later get eaten by Yoshi.

The Monty Mole biker gang seen in the first Super Mario Kart volume

In the Mario Open Golf volume, a Monty Mole cameos on the cover of the table of contents page.

In the Yoshi volume, a Monty Mole on top of a Mega Mole, can both be seen collecting flyers for Yossy's Pizza.

In the first Super Mario Kart volume, Bowser, along with a Monty Mole biker gang, arrives at the racing tournament. Bowser tells Mario that the Monty Mole biker gang will challenge him in the race. The Monty Moles in the audience proceed to steal the engine from Mario's car, saying that it is a waste of time to race without an engine. Later on in the story, the Monty Mole bikers block Mario's path, telling him that they do not care for the life of a "stupid gorilla". Mario uses a Boo to quickly disappear and make a quick getaway. Confused that Mario disappeared, the Monty Mole bikers try and find him, but they all accidentally fall down a cliff. Shortly after, they tell Bowser that they have failed their mission.

The "Mario to the Depths of the Earth" strip in the first 4koma volume

In the second Super Mario Kart volume, a Monty Mole is briefly seen when several characters stop for a pitstop. In a later chapter, Bowser uses his bazooka to fire a specific type of bullet known as a Choropū-dan (チョロプー 弾, Monty Mole bullet). The Choropū-dan creates several Monty Moles and a cat that fall down the sky. The Monty Moles skydive onto everyone, with Luigi and Donkey Kong Jr. crashing in the process. However, Mario is able to punch the Monty Moles (and cat) off of his kart. Later on, a Monty Mole can be seen amongst a crowd of several enemies that try to board a ship. In a mini-chapter based on Mario Paint, a Monty Mole can be seen throwing up after seeing a Beach Koopa on a pedestal.

In the third Super Mario Kart volume, Bowser calls upon several Monty Moles on multiple occasions that attempt to sabotage the race to make him win. This includes the Choropū Chika Butai, the Choropū Shinrin-tai, and Choropū-san. Near the end of the volume, everyone then goes to an abandoned underground city that the Monty Moles came from known as the Pū Tairiku after Luigi is stung by the scorpion that is thrown by Choropū-san.

In the first Yoshi's Safari volume, a Monty Mole can be seen commanded by Bowser alongside his other minions to take over Jewelry Land. Later on, several Monty Moles and Nipper Plants can be seen walking around Pipe Island.

In the second Yoshi's Safari volume, a Monty Mole alongside other enemies (now depicted with halos) are accidentally killed by Mario and his friends when they are trying to outrun a Chargin' Chuck. The souls of the enemies are absorbed into the Big Boo.

In the Mario & Wario volume, a Monty Mole, Koopa Troopa, Goomba, and a Sumo Bro throw pebbles at Mario's nose. Unfortunately, they all get crushed by Mario's nose when it unexpectedly grows larger.

Monty Moles make their final appearance in the manga in the third Super Mario 64 volume, in which several Monty Moles pelt Mario with rocks on his way up Tall, Tall Mountain. Ukkiki continues to help Mario climb up Tall, Tall, Mountain, but the Monty Moles quickly dig up in order to ambush them. Unfortunately, the Monty Moles are quickly crushed by the Iron Balls, falling into the abyss in the process.

Super Mario 4koma Manga Theater

The "Secret Pleasure" (right) strip in the first volume

Monty Moles have appeared in multiple volumes of Super Mario 4koma Manga Theater.

In volume 1, they are first seen in a description for them reading,「地面の中に隠れていて、マリオが近づくとポーンと飛び出してくる。チョロチョロとすばしっこく、モグラのくせに地上でもやたらと元気がいい。地下の世界には巨大化したやつもいる。」("It hides in the ground, and when Mario approaches, it pops out. It is very cheerful, and even though it is a mole, it is very energetic even above the ground. There are also huge ones in the underground world.")

In the "Secret Pleasure" (ひそかなよろこび) strip, a Monty Mole tries ambushing Mario, but he quickly runs past it. The Monty Mole then goes back into the hole it came from, and is able to camouflage into the ground when a Koopa Troopa walks past.

A Monty Mole would appear as a major character in the "Welcome to Wonderland" (ようこそワンダーランドへ) set of strips, first appearing in the "Monty Mole Appears" (チョロプー登場) strip.

In volume 2, the number 2 for the volume features a Monty Mole face.

In the "Training" (トレーニング) strip, a Monty Mole asks a Koopa Troopa if they want to race. The Monty Mole quickly zooms past the Koopa Troopa and sits by a tree to wait for them to catch up, as Koopa Troopa's legs are too slow. The Koopa Troopa then carries the Monty Mole away, as they had fallen asleep while waiting for them. This strip is a parody of the Tortoise and the Hare fable.

In the title strip for the "Heaven and Inferno" (天国と地獄) set of strips, a Monty Mole jumps onto Princess Peach's face while she is driving in her kart. The Monty Mole then proceeds to get a blowjob from Peach, which pleases the Monty Mole but disgusts Peach. A Monty Mole who is on Bowser's face while he is driving then comments on how they like the Monty Mole who was on Peach's face. Bowser then comments how disgusting the Monty Mole on his face is (likely suggesting that the Monty Mole on Bowser's face was getting a blowjob from him just like the Monty Mole on Peach's face).

In the "Jump contest" (ジャンプ・コンテスト) strip, a Monty Mole, along with a Blurp and a Jumping Piranha Plant all have a jumping contest to see which enemy can jump the highest.

In the "Abuse of Securities" (証券乱用) strip, a Monty Mole and Jumping Piranha Plant are in the way of Bowser while he is driving his kart. Bowser then proceeds to claim that if anyone else gets in his way, they have to clean his entire castle.

In the "Today is the day! Monty Mole" (今だ!チョロプー) strip, a Monty Mole talks about they have always been hiding in the dirt, and will leave the dirt once they see the best opportunity. The Monty Mole then says that today is the day to get out of the dirt. However, the Monty Mole accidentally jumped into Princess Peach's skirt when jumping out of the ground. Peach proceeded to slap the Monty Mole and angrily walk away, but the Monty Mole then says that they are still happy from doing what they did today.

In the "I told you! Monty Mole" (チョロプーですってば) strip, a Monty Mole says hello to a Mega Mole sitting next to them. The Mega Mole then pushes onto the Monty Mole's head, with the Monty Mole asking what the Mega Mole is trying to do with them. The Mega Mole then tells the Monty Mole to not walk, with the Monty Mole responding with "Chorokyu won't do that!" (Chorokyu being a pun based on Choropū, the Japanese name for Monty Mole, and Dokyun, which is an onomatopeia for heartbeat).

In the "Diffused Reflection" (乱反射) strip, while Luigi is driving in his kart, he accidentally throws his shell after making a jump. The shell then goes inside one of the Monty Mole's holes and starts bouncing around in the Monty Mole's burrow, much to the fear of the Monty Moles.

In the final page of volume 4, there is artwork of a Monty Mole jumping out of a Yoshi Egg much to Mario's shock. The artwork consists of various reused artwork from Super Mario World.

In volume 5, in the "Hole" (穴) strip, a Monty Mole bursts out of their hole and flops onto the ground, making Mario angry. However, Mario then comments how the hole that the Monty Mole jumped out of is really nicely cutout. Mario then comments that the reason the hole is so nicely cutout is because the Monty Moles burst out of the same hole every time (with a dialogue box even confirming that it is the reason). Several Monty Moles are then shown to be squished together in that exact same hole, likely due to the Monty Moles jumping out of the same hole.

In the "Jerk" (イヤなやつ) strip, during a race, the Monty Moles only jump onto Princess Peach's face and ignore everyone else. Princess Peach comments on that the only reason why they only go after her is because the Monty Moles are all males.

In "The meaning" (手段) strip, a Monty Mole would jump on Princess Peach's face while she is racing. As a desperate attempt to make the Monty Moles not jump onto her face, Princess Peach bites the penis of the Monty Mole on her face to get them off (as the Monty Mole attempted to get a blowjob from Princess Peach).

In the "Disappeared Monty Mole" (消えたチョロプー) strip (which takes place after "The meaning" strip), Bowser asks Princess Peach how she was able to swing Monty Mole earlier. Peach explains that she unintentionally bitten the Monty Mole's penis earlier, with Bowser yelling about how much she bitten it. Unknown to Peach and Bowser, the Monty Moles secretly overheard what they said while underground. It is then revealed that only one person and animal know the truth, as Mario comments on why that annoying character never appears again.

In the "Caricature Cookie" (にがおえクッキー), "Lets Ride Together Everyone" (みんなで乗ろう), and "The Whereabouts of the Drive" (ドライブの行方) strips, a Monty Mole (among other enemies) would appear as allies to Princess Peach (including riding a kart with her in the latter two strips).

In the "Big hole, small hole" (大穴小穴) strip, a Monty Mole would be mentioned by Luigi after Mario got his foot stuck in a small hole, as he told Mario that the hole was dug by a Monty Mole. However, the hole would shortly be revealed to have actually been dug by a Mega Mole, after Mario fell into the hole when it inexplicably grew larger.

In the "Attention About Car Width" (車幅注意 原文) strip, a Monty Mole is admiring their boss, whom is a Mega Mole walking past them. The Monty Mole talks about how they want to be like the Mega Mole, due to them being big, fuge, large, and dignified, just like a chad. By the Monty Mole's sheer luck, the Mega Mole dropped their pair of sunglasses, which the Monty Mole excitedly wears. As the Monty Mole skips happily with their newfound sunglasses, they accidentally hit two trees with their sunglasses (due to how big they were).

In the "Dull Disability" (ニブい障害) strip, Mario is driving by several Monty Moles until he is stopped by a Mega Mole in the way of the track (exclaiming how it is stupid). A Monty Mole then tells Mario how he is not able to dodge this Mega Mole. Unfortunately, Mario simply drives over the Mega Mole, much to the Monty Mole's disappointment.

In the "Shuku mei" (宿命) strip, a Monty Mole, Koopa Troopa, and Rex are confused on where Mario is. However, unknown to the enemies, Mario uses his caped form to easily fly past the enemies and reach the Giant Gate.

The "Find Weak Point!!" strip in the seventh volume
The "Die-cutting Princess-Peach" strip from the eighth volume

In volume 6, in the "Monty-Mole-Kun!" (チョロプー君!) strip, a Monty Mole inside a burrow declares about how their species caused trouble for everyone and how they attack anyone if they try to run from them, much to the agreement of the many Monty Moles also in the burrow. The main Monty Mole then goes by the hole to see how far Mario and the others have came, much to the support of the other Monty Moles. Unfortunately, after exiting the hole, the Monty Mole would get hit by Mario while he was driving his kart. The strip title might also possibly be a reference to Super Mario-kun (as both manga series were running around the same time).

In the "Monty-Mole-Kun Again!!" (再びチョロプー君‼︎) strip (which is a sequel to the "Monty-Mole-Kun!" strip), the now injured Monty Mole exclaims to all the other Monty Moles in the burrow that Mario is their main enemy, and that they need to attack his face to defeat him (much to the agreement and excitement of the other Monty Moles). The main Monty Mole would then jump out of the hole to once again attempt to attack Mario (exclaiming that it is their main skill). Unfortunately for the Monty Mole, Mario was in his invincible form while driving his kart, allowing him to once again effortlessly defeat the Monty Mole (with another Monty Mole in the distance being shocked on what just happened).

In volume 7, in the "Find Weak Point!!︎" (弱点を探せ‼︎) strip, during the Donut Plain Mario Countermeasure MEATING (ドーナツ平野マリオ対策会ギ), a Koopa Troopa asks a Monty Mole if they can share their idea (much to the Monty Mole's acceptance). The Koopa Troopa explains that Mario's weak point is Princess Peach, and that despite it being "despicable and dirty," they should attempt to take Peach hostage in-order to defeat Mario. However, the Monty Mole thinks that it is a stupid (and likely dangerous) idea to attempt to kidnap Peach by themselves (while the other enemies are utterly confused by the idea).

In volume 8, in the "Ghost Leg" (あみだ) strip, a Monty Mole had planned out a route of the Ghost Leg so that them and the other Monty Moles can prepare to ambush Mario and his friends during the race. The Monty Mole would pick another Monty Mole to be the one who attacks Princess Peach during the race, much to the chosen Monty Mole's excitement.

In "The Prey Mario" (マリオ) strip, Mario would find a Monty Mole's hole while driving in his kart. Mario then attempts to lure the Monty Mole out of their hole by promising the Monty Mole that he will give them food if they come out of their hole. However, as the Monty Mole happily comes out of their hole, Mario would then proceed to hit them with a Koopa Shell and laugh at their misfortune (with the Monty Mole thinking that what Mario did to them was way too cruel).

In the self titled "Monty Mole" (チョロプー) strip, a Monty Mole hides in the soil in order to ambush Mario. After hearing what to appear to be Mario's footsteps, the Monty Mole would burst out of the soil. However, the Monty Mole would quickly then quickly realize that the footsteps were simply from an overslept Koopa Troopa. After the false alarm, the Monty Mole would tediously fill up their hole back up so they can try again to successfully ambush Mario. The Monty Mole would then jump out of the soil once again to attempt to ambush Mario, only to be shocked that the same Koopa Troopa from before was back (as they had to get something that they left behind).

In the "Die-cutting Princess-Peach" (型抜き) strip, Princess Peach is baking a cake for everyone until she realizes that she forgot to make a die cut for the cake. With no other option, Peach asks a Monty Mole if they can help out by jumping through the board in order to make a cutout for the cake, which the Monty Mole agrees to do. Once the now Monty Mole-shaped cake is finished, Mario questions on what the shape of the cake is meant to be, with Peach replying that it is nothing to worry about.

In volume 10, in another self titled "Monty Mole" (チョロプー) strip, several Monty Moles agree to play a game of hide-and-seek. Unfortunately, all the Monty Moles hide in the exact same spot, with it resulting in the Monty Moles questioning on who will be the one who will try to find everyone (which is a hard task for the Monty Moles as they are more built for hiding rather than seeking).

In volume 11, in the "I am a Sniper" (俺はスナイパー) strip, a Monty Mole would congratulate a Snufit by giving them a rice ball after finishing their target practice.

In the "Invincible weakness" (無敵の弱点) strip, Mario uses his metal form to effortlessly kill a Monty Mole.

In the Game & Watch Gallery volume, in the "Monty Mole Makes Manhole" (チョロプー「俺もマンホールを作るぞーーー」) strip, A Monty Mole attempts to make their own manhole by digging a hole in the ground and putting leaves and sticks on the top of it. However, Yoshi tells the Monty Mole that they made a pitfall instead of a manhole.

In "The Fate Of Two Peoples" (二人の運命 キノ夫) strip, a Monty Mole questions Yoshi on if they should raise the manhole lid now (due to a Toad attempting to help a female Toad from falling into a pit). However, Yoshi tells the Monty Mole that he wants to see how the situation escalates.

In the "Beard Dance Mario" (ヒゲダンス マリオ) strip, a Monty Mole attempted to throw a heart at Yoshi, but Mario took the heart instead.

Monty Moles would make their last appearance in Super Mario 4koma Manga Theater in the "Beautiful River Monty Mole" (清流) strip, where a Monty Mole would throw a heart into the water, which at first made Yoshi think it was a waste of a heart. However, the heart actually helped clear out all of the sewage that was previously polluting the water.

Super Mario-kun

The cover for volume 1 chapter 7 of Super Mario-kun

Monty Moles have appeared in many volumes of Super Mario-kun. They were originally depicted wearing sunglasses like most pieces of media during the time. However, starting with volume 18, Monty Moles would get a redesign which gave them open eyes and a visible tooth (however, their original design would still be used occasionally up until volume 27). Alongside the main volumes, Monty Moles also appeared in multiple puzzles throughout volumes 4-10.

In volume 1, their first appearance is a small cameo in the first chapter when Bowser talks about his army, where a Monty Mole can be seen amongst other enemies. They make an actual appearance in the seventh chapter, where Mario and Yoshi attempt to steal the Monty Moles' coins (due to them being tricked by a Goomba). The Monty Moles then attack Mario and Yoshi for trying to steal their coins. As Mario tries flying with the Cape Feather and escaping, he hits the ceiling. However, Yoshi manages to eat all of the Monty Moles. Unfortunately, this causes an enlarged Monty Mole named Super Choropū to emerge. Super Choropū is angry at Mario and Yoshi for killing the Monty Moles and attempts to kill Mario and Yoshi as well. However, Mario is able to burn Super Choropū with several Fire Flowers. In a later chapter, Yoshi eats a Monty Mole alongside two Goombas. The final chapter features an original power-up for Mario called the "Super Shades" that transforms Mario into Mogura Mario, a form that is based off of Monty Moles. He uses this form to dig through the dirt with other Monty Moles being seen in the background.

In volume 2, Yoshi can be seen eating two Monty Moles during one chapter. In a later chapter, a Monty Mole can be seen with a Fall form seen with other Fall enemies (despite never having a fall form in the original Super Mario World). The Fall variant of Monty Mole gives them a Mario mask while still keeping their sunglasses. A following chapter has a Monty Mole shop named Harajuku Popular Building (原宿人気館) that can be seen in the background of the fair Bowser and Roy make, although the place is never visited. Finally, in one of the 4koma strips, some fried Monty Moles can be seen with a bunch of other cooked enemies.

In volume 3, A Monty Mole makes a very brief cameo in the Mario's Super Dodgeball Winning Strategy Technique chapter, being one of the enemies that gets smacked by a dodgeball.

The Monty Mole farmers from volume 5

In volume 4, a Magikoopa smacks Mario with a Monty Mole disguised as a balloon in one chapter. In a later chapter, a ghost Monty Mole alongside a ghost Morton and other ghost enemies can be seen in Hell, being one of the many ghosts of Bowser's minions that Mario killed. The puzzle preceding this chapter has a maze shaped like a Monty Mole.

In volume 5, Monty Moles can be seen in an artwork of Bowser alongside other enemies being in a Yoshi Egg. Monty Moles later appear in a puzzle, where several Monty Moles kidnap Yoshi and it is up to Mario to rescue Yoshi. Monty Moles have a major role in the chapter proceeding this puzzle, where a group of Monty Mole farmers see Luigi, Yoshi, and Mario, who has been turned into a mushroom. After Mario provokes the Monty Moles for trying to harvest him, the Monty Moles then attack Mario and Yoshi. Luigi tries planning a surprise attack by shooting fire at them but accidentally hits his friends instead, with the Monty Moles then hitting Luigi with a paddle stick. After defeating Mario and Yoshi, the Monty Moles have an idea to take them to their king, but the Monty Moles change their mind and instead attempt to feed Mario and Yoshi to their livestock. While the Monty Moles show Mario and his friends Butametto and Ushimetto, Luigi performs another surprise attack by kicking Mario into the Monty Moles, with it being successful this time. However, the Monty Moles then call a group of Swoopers to then fuse with them, creating a fusion of both species. The Monty Mole Swooper hybrids then eat the mushroom Mario, which reverts him back to normal, but the Monty Mole Swoopers become stronger from the mushroom. They then send Butametto and Ushimetto to trample Mario and his friends, leading to Mario finding a coin in a Rotating Block. though unimpressed at first, Mario quickly finds out that the Monty Mole Swoopers are afraid of the light that the coin admits and him alongside Luigi and Yoshi use several coins to back the Monty Mole Swoopers into a corner. After the Monty Mole Swoopers forfeit, they tell Mario that Bowser's Castle is in the nearby pipe. Mario and his friends then leave through the pipe only to fall in lava. In a later chapter, a species of undead Monty Moles named Choropū Men'iwa appear and attack Mario and Yoshi alongside Urami no Iwa of other enemies that Mario and Yoshi have killed in the past. The gattai monster later in the same chapter also has Monty Mole paws.

In volume 6, a Monty Mole amongst other enemies are crushed into a Yoshi Egg to make Yoshi into Star Yoshi. Monty Moles appear in one maze puzzle which gives them open eyes and two fang-like teeth (this design heavily resembles their future redesign in volume 18). In one chapter that features a Mega Mole, the Mega Mole refers to themselves as a normal Monty Mole when Mario shrinks them with the Lightning (despite the Mega Mole still resembling a Mega Mole).[21] In another chapter, Yoshi makes a stew which has a Goomba, Koopa Troopa, and Monty Mole in it, which he feeds to Mario. In a later chapter, a Monty Mole come to Bowser's lair to show him their flyer for Bowser that says,「地獄の サーキット場完成!! - 命の保障は いたしません。これるもんならきてみやがれ!! "かなやしかけもいっぱい"」("Infernal circuit field completed! We aren't responsible for your life. Come and see it anyway!! 'It's wonderful'"), with Mario, Luigi and Yoshi heading to said area. The Monty Mole is then instructed by Bowser to help Donkey Kong Jr. in his rematch at Donut Plains 1. Later in the same chapter, the Monty Mole from earlier in the chapter comes back to jump on Luigi's face while he is driving, which results in Luigi crashing into Yoshi. In a following chapter, Mario had many Monty Moles attaching to his face during when he is fighting Bowser in a Battle Mode. However, Mario uses a Fire Flower to quickly burn the Monty Moles and himself into a crisp (though Mario is fine afterwards). Finally, a Monty Mole appears in a spot-the-difference puzzle by a snowman. The Ragumo in the final chapter of this volume was heavily redesigned to look much more like Monty Mole.

The cover for volume 9 chapter 2

In volume 7, Yoshi brings a lot of food products based on enemies. One of these food products is a canned Monty Mole labeled 100% Choropū Beetroot (チョロプー ビーつ 100%). A Monty Mole appears in a maze-like puzzle in which Yoshi has to eat a bunch of enemies. A Monty Mole appears in another puzzle, where they are one of the many enemies who are accused of making Princess Peach cry. In a later chapter, a Monty Mole can be seen in Peach's Castle alongside other enemies attending a party. Monty Moles make two brief appearances in the last two maze puzzles of the volume alongside other enemies.

In volume 9, several Monty Moles alongside other enemies appear ordering from Mario and Yoshi's cookie shop. In the following chapter, a large ominous Monty Mole can be seen in the cover for the chapter. Later on in the actual chapter, Mario pulls a Venus Fire Trap out of their pipe after defeating it, with several Monty Moles seen attached to the stem. Yoshi then proceeds to eat the Monty Moles. Lighting then hits the pipe which combines the corpses of the Venus Fire Trap along with a Muncher, a Nipper Plant, and a Monty Mole into creating a fusion of them known as Pakkun Mogura. Monty Moles also appear in one puzzle walking alongside other characters. In a much later chapter, a Monty Mole wearing a sun hat can be seen with Mario and his friends at the beach.

Artwork of three Monty Moles from volume 17

In volume 10, the pinball machine Roy Koopa makes Mario go through has Monty Mole bumpers. A Monty Mole also makes a cameo in a maze puzzle, with them using their Super Mario World design.

In volume 13, two Monty Moles can be seen in Bowser's photo in the museum alongside other enemies. In a later chapter, Morton makes Mario and Yoshi play a Virtual Boy game, which features a part with Monty Moles.

In volume 14, a Monty Mole is nearly eaten by Yoshi when he uses the Mole Tank to dig underground. Monty Mole's design is slightly different in this volume, with them having three hairs on their head, a rat-like nose, and short stubby claws.

Several Monty Moles being commanded by Bowser in volume 19

In volume 17, a Monty Mole (who uses their Super Mario 64 appearance) owns a shop in the flee market that sells a crown, earrings, a necklace, and a ring. However, when Mario puts on the jewelry, he starts choking due to the jewelry being too tight, with the earrings then also being revealed to be small Chain Chomps as well. The Monty Mole offers Mario some aojiru to help, which Mario pukes after drinking it. In the end, Mario still buys the crown. On the side of page 59 (during these events), artwork of three Monty Moles is shown. While the first two Monty Moles use their Super Mario 64 appearance like the Monty Mole in the chapter, the third Monty Mole has a unique design with an "A" on its forehead, thick eyebrows, and a long chin. In a later Mario Kart 64 themed chapter, several Monty Moles (now using the traditional Super Mario-kun design) pop out of the ground and cling onto Mario's kart. Peach, however, throws a ! Block at Mario which blows up the Monty Moles.

In volume 18, several Monty Moles can be seen when Mario is about to throw baseballs at the targets. The Monty Moles pop out of the targets and throw the baseballs back at Mario. The Monty Moles then attempt to throw bombs at Mario, but Mario uses his Bunny Ears from Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins to throw the bombs back at the Monty Moles. This is the first volume to use the current design used in Super Mario-kun (though one Monty Mole has sunglasses in-reference to their older design from the manga).

In volume 19, Bowser commands a group of Monty Moles to attack Mario, but they are quickly electrocuted by Mario's friends that he made throughout the Super Mario 64 arc. Dorrie can be seen chewing on a Monty Mole and King Bob-omb is seen holding one.

The Monty Mole from Noki Bay seen in volume 31

In volume 23, a mother big Monty Mole named Choropūko and her children have a major role in a chapter. Normal Monty Moles also appear in a later chapter of the volume, were they help build Bowser an underground amusement park. Unfortunately, the amusement park would be destroyed once the cave started to collapse. Like in volume 18, both the the original design and the redesign for Monty Mole in Super Mario-kun are seen.

In volume 27, a Monty Mole can be seen briefly in the Woody Woods adaptation from the Mario Party 3 arc when Mario is launched into the air. This is the final appearance of Monty Mole's original design in the manga (excluding the ghost Monty Mole in volume 55).

In volume 31, the Monty Mole from Super Mario Sunshine appears, resembling Monty Moles from the manga, but still keeping his hat from the game. During the events in Pinna Park, the Monty Mole (also accompanied by a Swimpin' Stu) shoots Bullet Bills at Yoshi and F.L.U.D.D. with his cannon. Yoshi and F.L.U.D.D. then later come back in a giant Yoshi Egg, which they roll towards the Monty Mole. The Monty Mole attempts shooting them with Bullet Bills, but the egg deflects them. The Monty Mole then attempts to throw the Bob-ombs at the egg, but Yoshi rams into the Monty Mole, causing them all to explode (though the Monty Mole is the only one defeated). Later on in Noki Bay, the Monty Mole returns once again to clog the waterfall with a giant cork, just like in Super Mario Sunshine. When Mario and Yoshi reach the Monty Mole, he starts shooting Bullet Bills and throwing Bob-ombs at them rapidly. Yoshi gives Mario some glue, which he uses to glue the Bob-ombs to himself. Mario then jumps towards the Monty Mole to kamikaze onto him and explode the both of them. Although the Monty Mole gets defeated from the explosion, Mario recovers from it rather quickly.

The Mogura Matsuri from volume 46

In volume 36, Mario can be seen playing an adaptation of Whack-a-Monty which is by his house. When Mario accidentally smacks Luigi, one of the Monty Moles can be seen smiling due to not getting hit.

In volume 42, a Monty Mole makes a very brief cameo in the background with several Spikes when Mario and his friends are in World 6.

In volume 44, a Monty Mole with glasses can be seen briefly ambushing Mario in a chapter, though they do not attack him. In a later chapter, several Monty Mole miners named Chorozairu can be seen working for a Buzzy Beetle.

In volume 45, a Monty Mole named Choropū the Picasso (named after the famous artist {{wp|Pablo Picasso) can be seen as the main antagonist of a chapter.

In volume 46, Monty Moles appear in the table of contents page, mimicking their New Super Mario Bros. U artwork. Monty Moles make a major role in the fourth chapter, when Mario, Luigi, and Toad stumble upon the「もぐらまつり」(Mogura Matsuri, Mole Festival), a festival filled with Monty Moles, some of which are wearing headbands. They meet a female Monty Mole (who is also a Rocky Wrench, which was shown in the first chapter of the volume) named Pūko who gives them a tour of the festival. One of the areas of the festival is a whack-a-mole game which has Mario being whacked by Monty Moles as he tries to whack them, which Pūko reveals it to actually be「チョロプーがたたくゲーム」(Choropū ga tataku gēmu, a game where Monty Moles whack the player, since the Japanese name of "whack-a-mole",「モグラたたき」(mogura tataki), literally translates to "mole whack" and can be interpreted as the moles being the subject instead of the object). While Pūko continues the tour for Mario and his friends, a Morty Mole destroys the festival due to it being in their home, causing the Monty Moles to flee. While Mario fights the Morty Mole, Pūko gives Mario a super-metal, invincible power suit that was handed down for generations in the Monty Mole family, which Mario takes off immediately after feeling uncomfortable wearing it. As the Morty Mole attacks Mario, Luigi wins two Statue Leaves from a raffle run by a Monty Mole with glasses which they use to defeat the Morty Mole and save the Mogura Matsuri.

The ghost enemies from volume 55

In volume 47, a cooked Monty Mole with sauce on its head can be seen as one of the foods Yoshi gets to eat alongside other cooked enemies in the first chapter. In a later chapter, Nabbit steals a Monty Mole's fur among other things from other enemies. Later in the same chapter, Nabbit puts Luigi's face on a Monty Mole while he is putting his and Yoshi's faces on several enemies using Luigi's Poltergeist 3000.

In volume 54, a mother Monty Mole named Choropū (Haha) asks Mario and Yoshi to give her children a good Christmas.

In volume 55, when Yoshi takes a picture in Slaparazzi, several ghosts of enemies that he has eaten in the past can be seen, including a Monty Mole. The ghost Monty Mole uses their original design from the manga, making it the first time this design was referenced since volume 27.

In volume 59, three Monty Moles would reappear in an adaptation of the Mario Party 7 minigame Monty's Revenge, where they would be commanded by Bowser to wack Mario and his friends with their mallets. The Monty Moles first angrily whack Mario repeatedly, due to all the times that Mario harmed them over the years. The Monty Moles then attempt to whack Princess Peach, but they are quickly told not to do so by Bowser. However, Bowser tells the Monty Moles that they can whack Luigi as much as they want, which the Monty Moles promptly do (though Luigi finds this unfair). After Luigi surrenders and gets disqualified, the Monty Moles attempt to whack Yoshi. However, Yoshi would break the rules of the minigame by wearing a helmet and later attempting to eat the three Monty Moles (though he only managed to eat one of them). The latter action that Yoshi did was what got him disqualified. As Mario is the only player left, the two remaining Monty Moles attempt to whack him once again. However, Mario makes a funny face to distract the Monty Moles. After their uncontrollable laughter, the Monty Moles attempt to find Mario once again, until they eventually find "Mario" and proceed to whack "him" relentlessly. However, the Monty Moles quickly realize that they were not actually whacking Mario, but instead it was Bowser that they attacked (due to Mario putting a mask of his face onto Bowser). Mario would then make a quick getaway from the minigame as the Monty Moles were distracted from their realization.

Super Mario Adventures

A Monty Mole in Super Mario Adventures

In Super Mario Adventures, a Monty Mole and a smaller Monty Mole alongside other enemies can be seen coming out of the pipes and surrounding both Mario and Luigi. However, the Monty Moles are quickly defeated by Mario when he spits a Goomba out of a pipe, hitting all of the enemies including the Monty Moles.

Towards the end of the comic, a Monty Mole wearing a red tuxedo can be seen alongside a Mega Mole wearing a blue tuxedo who both attend Bowser's wedding.

Monty Moles use both of their two main early designs from Super Mario World in the comic.

4koma Gag Battle

It has been requested that additional images be uploaded for this section. Remove this notice only after the additional image(s) have been added.

Monty Moles appear in various strips of 4koma Gag Battle, usually retaining their behaviors from the games. However, unlike other Mario 4koma manga, Monty Moles do not appear as frequently.

In the Super Mario Daishuugou volume, a Monty Mole appears in the self titled "Monty Mole" (ちょろぷ) strip, where they attempt to ambush Mario and Luigi. Unfortunately, as the Monty Mole bursted out of the ground, they quickly realize that Mario and Luigi were not there. This causes the Monty Mole to become greatly upset and start to cry (which Mario and Luigi observe from a distance).

In the "Princess Peach Was Kidnapped!" (ピーチ姫がさらわれた!) strip, a Monty Mole was among one of enemies that Mario imagined when Luigi informed him that Princess Peach was kidnapped by Bowser yet again.

In the Mario Kart 64 volume, in the "Pray Tour Guide Peach" (合掌 ピーチ) strip, Princess Peach meets a herd of Monty Moles while giving a tour of Moo Moo Farm. However, the Monty Moles tell Peach to be quiet, as they are in the middle of a funeral for their friends who have been crushed. The Monty Moles then continue with their funeral as Peach watches uncomfortably.

In the second Super Mario Sunshine volume, in the "Actually…" (実は…) strip, Mario questions on how many Bob-ombs the Monty Mole has while fighting them in Pina Park. Mario then decides to take a peak inside of the Monty Mole's cannon while they were flinching when Mario threw the Bob-omb back at the Monty Mole. Inside the cannon, Mario discovers that the Bob-ombs that the Monty Mole threw were a built-in product of the cannon (and likely made by the Monty Mole himself).

Monty Mole would make their last appearance in 4koma Gag Battle in the "I Don't Like Killer (Dead)" (キラーなんてキラーイ(死)) strip, where the Monty Mole in Pina Park attempted to defeat Mario by shooting Bullet Bills at him. However, Mario tanks the hits from the Bullet Bills, before proceeding to effortlessly defeat the Monty Mole by running at extreme speeds and destroying their cannon.

Dr. Mario-kun

The Monty Mole in episode 39 of Dr. Mario-kun

In Dr. Mario-kun, a singular Monty Mole appears as a somewhat recurring character, usually being an ally towards Dr. Mario rather than an enemy unlike in most other media. The Monty Mole in this manga uses a similar design to that of the classic sunglasses design seen in the artwork of Super Mario World.

The Monty Mole would make their first appearance in episode 39, where they shovel through the ground to tell Dr. Mario that Luigi and Yoshi caught a drill virus. After capturing the drill viruses, the Monty Mole would later help Mario and his friends escape the volcano by helping dig the path as the lava starts to rise. At one point in the episode, Wario, Bowser Jr. and a Koopa Troopa all wear Monty Mole themed costumes.

In episode 52, the Monty Mole (alongside other characters) can be seen eating the floor of Dr. Mario's hospital after eating the food that Waluigi made offscreen.

In episode 59, the Monty Mole can be seen on the final page waving in the distance along with various other characters from Dr. Mario-kun (due to it being the last episode of the manga).

Nintendo Adventure Books

Although Mega Moles appear frequently in the Nintendo Adventure Books, Monty Moles only appear once as a cameo in one of the puzzles from Dinosaur Dilemma when Mario is being chased by the Mega Moles in the cellar of the haunted mansion. The two Monty Moles seen in the puzzle have no effect to the story. They also reuse their Super Mario World artwork.

Television and films

Super Mario World: Mario to Yoshi no Bōken Land

In the interactive OVA Super Mario World: Mario to Yoshi no Bōken Land, after Iggy Koopa's horde of Koopa Troopas, Rexes, and Chargin' Chucks are defeated by Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi, Iggy summons a group of Monty Moles and Koopa Paratroopas. However, the Monty Moles and Koopa Paratroopas are quickly disposed of by Yoshi when he swallows a Green Shell and breathes fire on them. The puzzle shortly before these events also incorrectly showed Mario jumping on several Monty Moles instead of Chargin' Chucks.

Super Mario World television series

Several "Gophers" singing "Cheatsy's Life" in the Super Mario World episode "Gopher Bash"
“Oh, when there's underhanded evil to be done, to be done, then Cheatsy's life becomes a lot of fun, lots of fun!”
Gophers, Gopher Bash

Monty Moles (though never called as such and always referred to as Gophers, also called King Koopa's Nintendo Gophers)[22] make an appearance in the Super Mario World television series, where they exclusively appear in the episode "Gopher Bash" as supporting antagonists.

In the episode, several Gophers acted as minions of Cheatsy Koopa to aid him in his plot to steal all the crops grown by the Cave People of Dome City. At night, the Gophers helped Cheatsy by stealing the crops and replacing them with Piranha Plants and fire plants, laughing alongside Cheatsy as well. The following morning, when Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi discover that the crops have been stolen, Cheatsy and the Gophers use the Piranha Plants to attack Mario and his friends. Unfortunately for Cheatsy and his Gopher minions, Yoshi manages to eat all of the Piranha Plants. Right when Yoshi is about to eat the last Piranha Plant, one of the Gophers attempts to save the Piranha Plant, but Yoshi attempts to pull the stem of the Piranha Plant, along with the Gopher clinging onto it. Fortunately for the Gopher, Cheatsy commands himself and the other Gophers to help pull the stem of the now eaten Piranha Plant, only for Yoshi to manage to pull the stem out of the ground, exposing both Cheatsy and his Gopher minions out of the ground. Cheatsy then tells Mario and Luigi that the only way they are gonna get their crops back is by shopping at the Koopamart, before him and the Gophers quickly go back to their underground lair.

Once arriving back at their cave lair, Cheatsy tells the Gophers that they did a splendiferous job helping steal the crops and that the Cave People will either have to buy their crops back from him or starve. Afterwards, Cheatsy and the Gophers then sing a self praising song called "Cheatsy's Life," with the Gophers singing backup on how Cheatsy's life is fun when there is underhanded evil to be done (making it one of the very few pieces of official Mario media to have Monty Moles being fully voice acted). Unfortunately for Cheatsy, Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi were able to secretly follow Cheatsy back to his lair and proceed to kidnap the Gophers one by one while Cheatsy and the other Gophers were busy singing their song. The trio then proceeded to tie up the kidnapped Gophers and suspend them onto the ceiling. Once Cheatsy finishes singing his song, Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi then drop the suspended Gophers onto Cheatsy, ultimately crushing him. Mario and his friends then proceed to bring the crops back to Dome City, before Cheatsy makes a remark on how much he hates those plumbers.

LEGO Super Mario

Monty Moles appear in LEGO Super Mario as part of the Monty Mole & Super Mushroom, Desert Pokey, and Yoshi's Gift House sets. Like most other enemies, when a Monty Mole gets stomped on by Mario, Mario gains a coin from the Monty Mole. In the Monty Mole & Super Mushroom set, Mario can fling the Monty Mole out of their burrow to then be able to jump on them.

Appearances in pop culture

Robot Chicken

Three "Gophers" from the Robot Chicken skit "Moo Moo Farm in Real Life"

Monty Moles (though never called as such and always referred to as Gophers) appear in the "Moo Moo Farm in Real Life" skit of the season 11 Robot Chicken episode "May Cause a Squeakquel." The Gopher's role in this skit is vaguely similar to how they act in Mario Kart 64 (though the Gophers use their current design from Super Mario 64 DS rather than their design from Mario Kart 64).

After the farmers got Moo Moo Farm to become a race track, one of the farmers asks if they should move the Cowss and Gophers. However, the other farmer ensures that they will be fine. Unfortunately, when Mario and the others are racing on Moo Moo Farm, they run over a few gophers along the way, killing the gophers and causing their blood to splatter everywhere. At the end of the skit, when one of the farmers dies from touching a Fake Item Box, a Gopher would come out from under the ground and take her head down with them.

General information

Physical appearance

Monty Moles are consistently depicted as having light brown or orange fur, a white belly, a few claws on their hands and feet, and squinted eyes (sometimes covered by sunglasses). They usually have a pair of whiskers and either a round or an elongated nose. Several appearances also depict Monty Moles as having a large bucktooth. Although Monty Moles were introduced as a relative of Rocky Wrenches, many games since New Super Mario Bros. Wii use a variation of the Monty Mole model for Rocky Wrench but with added goggles. While it is not confirmed, this suggests that Rocky Wrenches retroactively became a variant of Monty Moles or that this is only applicable to certain game appearances.

In Super Mario World, Monty Moles appear to be wearing sunglasses as well as having a short, gopher-like nose. However, in another artwork, they have visible, squinting eyes and long, mole-like noses. This game's graphics seem to depict the latter, though the jumping sprite depicts a slight split in the lip; further games typically used either one of these artworks as a design up until the redesign in Super Mario 64 DS.

In Super Mario 64, Monty Moles use their squinting design from Super Mario World but with an added pair of pronounced teeth, a black nose, and somewhat larger limbs.

In Super Mario Sunshine, Monty Mole has much lankier arms than usual, a more bright orange color, a smaller white patch, and a green hat. The contours of the eyes behind the squint are also visible if examined closely enough.

Around the release of Mario Party 5, most of Monty Mole's appearances use the Super Mario World design, though with more saturated colors and orange fur.

Since most games after Super Mario 64 DS, Monty Moles were given a redesign that consolidates the two designs from the Super Mario World artworks, with a small amount of influence from the Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine designs. From the "sunglasses" artwork, they get the smooth, cheek-less head sides, white upper lip, and small nose; from the other Super Mario World artwork, they get the distinct squint; from the Super Mario 64 design, they get the visible teeth, though the number is reduced to one; and from the Super Mario Sunshine design, they get the wideness of the upper lip. This design would become the standard design for later games, though there has been variation on the color of the lower lip, with brown appearing most consistently.

In Mario Superstar Baseball, while the playable Monty Mole is designed after its appearance in Super Mario 64 DS, the Monty Moles in the crowd are designed after their appearance in both Mario Power Tennis and Mario Party 6.

Characteristics

Being moles, Monty Moles spend most of their time beneath the ground. They do not act much differently from moles in the real world, and are not blind. On some occasions, a Monty Mole opens its eyes, particularly when they are shocked or startled. Monty Moles are bipedal, and this allows them to pick up objects and use them, such as in Super Mario 64, where their attack is to pick up and throw rocks at Mario. Monty Moles also seem to have a happy and cheerful personality in some games such as most of their playable appearances and in Hotel Mario. Monty Moles also seem to have an affinity for several sports. Monty Moles love baseball, and according to their Mario Superstar Baseball description, they usually hop out of their dens due to getting fired up for a game of baseball (and they sometimes get too fired up when they get the ball). Although not explicitly said, Monty Moles also seem to like soccer as they are playable in Mario Strikers Charged. Monty Moles also have an affinity for golf, as the Monty Mole NPCs in Mario Golf: World Tour and Mario Golf: Super Rush usually give golf tips to the player and talk about their experience playing it. In some appearances, Monty Moles talk with a country accent (though in some other appearances they talk normally). Monty Moles tend to live most commonly in cave areas (such as World 5-4 and Breezy Tunnel), mountain areas (such as Tall, Tall Mountain and Cookie Mountain), grassland areas (such as Sunbeam Plains and Yoshi Hill), and farm areas (such as Moo Moo Farm and Moo Moo Meadows), though occasionally they can be found in other areas as well.

Alignment

Monty Moles are typically shown to be working for Bowser, usually commanded to attack Mario and his friends like other Koopa Troop minions. However, Monty Moles sometimes do other things for Bowser like the Monty Bros. in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story making Project K for an easy escape tunnel to kidnap Princess Peach, and the Monty Moles in Breezy Tunnel from Paper Mario: The Origami King attempting to mine valuable resources that Bowser could sell. Despite this, in the beta for Paper Mario: Sticker Star, a king Monty Mole named King Choropū seems like they would have been the true leader of the species, but they were removed for unknown reasons (though prior to this appearance they were also indirectly mentioned in volume 5 of Super Mario-kun). Monty Moles have also sometimes worked for someone else like the Monty Bros. in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story betraying Bowser to work for Fawful, due to him making them elite employees, and changing Project K to be a train track that Fawful could use to travel across the Mushroom Kingdom. Another Monty Mole variant named Mawful Mole and their metal counterparts seem to also be Fawful minions as well.

Monty Moles usually have a hatred towards plumbers (specifically Mario and Luigi), due to plumbers causing leaks from pipes to have their tunnels filled with muck,[23] and Mario (as well as Yoshi) also typically harming Monty Moles as well. However, in some instances Monty Moles have been nice or helped Mario in a few of the games and manga.

Species history

Monty Moles seem to have been around for a long time, as in the third Super Mario Kart volume of the Super Mario Kodansha manga, it is confirmed that the species originated from an ancient city known as the Pū Tairiku, though not much is known about how the Monty Mole species evolved there. Monty Moles have also appeared in games that take place in the past such as the past of Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time and several Yoshi games.

Trivia

  • Incidentally, Monty Moles share a name with a British video game protagonist.
  • In the 54th and 58th issues of the UK's Official Nintendo Magazine, Monty Moles were called "gophers."[29][30] However, later issues simply referred to Monty Moles as just "moles."
  • In the official Nintendo Power guidebook for Super Mario Sunshine, the section for the Monty Mole in Noki Bay is called "The Full Monty," a reference to the 1997 comedy of the same name.[31]
  • The Perfect Ban Mario Character Daijiten states in the description of the "Beast clan" that Monty Moles (alongside other enemies of the same classification) were originally regular animals that were magically turned into monsters.
  • Despite Monty Moles being called gophers in some pieces of media, gophers are not biologically related to moles in real life.
